Thanks to Stanley

Post by Elainemarkettrader »

:cool4: I just want to thank Stanley for using my market stall picture as a header for his excellent ' Stanley's View' article on Feb 21st, about local traders. We need all the support we can get to keep Barlick on the up!

Nice! Thank you Elaine, you're welcome and yes it was a nasty day! The reason you are in the foreground is that you illustrate the point I was making about local traders. We are lucky in Barlick because we still have local businesses trading and my constant theme is that we should all support them. Remember that any money passing through them stays in the local economy, too much of the profit made in the town is exported. My measure of recovery in the real world is how these businesses are faring and the number of empty shops in the town centre at the moment is worrying and an indicator that all is not quite as rosy as the government tells us.

It was market day yesterday and a couple of traders buttonholed me to thank me for the article. I like the idea of the market and wish it well!

I still think part of the empty shops ( has the toyshop gone , I seem the american candy bar now in it ) is particulary the middle of Majestic Buildings, I still think what the agents wanted for sale or rental was too much in relation to feasible profit. The newer rolls shop(ex local post-office) near Rolls-Royce seems to be doing quite regular trade.

Where smaller shops are thriving is where there are higher immigrant populations, (any ethnic or local country significant groupings ), as specialist shops - Bakers, Butchers, Take Aways etc appealing to a particular palete have both their own market to appeal to and some more local populations to try out there wares.

Slightly broadening the subject, Pendle Council issued a "Pendle Profile" in 2011 which outlines many of the fundamental statistics about Pendle. I would hazard a guess that some of these statistics are out of date and should only be used as a guide. The whole message is rather "upbeat" as you would expect from this sort of promotional document. The down sides and any embarrassing statistics have been glossed over.

A couple of faux pas regarding famous people from the Pendle District Report

"Sir Roger Bannister, famous for being the first man to run the 4-minute mile, is a part of the
Bannister family whose home is now the Pendle Heritage Centre."

"Wallace Hartley came from Colne and was the bandleader on the RMS Titanic on its maiden
voyage. He was subsequently buried in Colne and can still be found in the family tomb."
