Thanks for all the pics! Now I know why Stanley refers to `bread and circus'. How about this...
Olympic hydrogen cars fill up in Swindon
30th July 2012, Swindon Advertiser
Low emission Olympic taxis are being sent to Swindon to refuel after the hydrogen filling station in London was closed for safety reasons. Three hydrogen fuelled black cabs are being driven on a diesel-powered car transporter this morning on a 130-mile round trip from London to South Marston for a three minute fill up at Honda. The hydrogen station serving vehicles near the Olympic Park has been closed for safety and security reasons during the games, meaning the South Marston station, which is operated by industrial gases company BOC, is the closest. Nick Rolf, innovation manager for hydrogen systems at BOC, said: “They are going to fill up twice this week, on Tuesday and Thursday or Friday. “Our understanding is that they are not driving, they are coming on the back of a transporter. If they drive to Swindon they’re not going to have any fuel left by the tme they get back. “They will be driven back on the transporter and then be distributed in London.”

Twenty Twelve on BBC this week ( I Player ) commented on their proposed electric taxis all needing to be recharged some 18hours out of 24 and a limited range , shows reality is more daft than fiction.

Tiz, then there's the diesel the transporter(s) burn for the 130 mile round trip.... What surprises me is that they didn't send them to someone who is storing and using hydrogen. Mind you, hydrogen is dangerous stuff. When I was working for REW we had a job at Littleborough modifying a big high pressure vessel for Akzo. It involved a lot of very heavy welding in situ and next to us was a yard where the hydrogen tankers were parked that served the plant. You've never seen fire precautions like that!
Incidentally, I enquired what the vessel we were working on was for. It was very heavy, the pressure test we did on the modification was 1250psi. It turned out it was for emulsifying fabric softener which could only be done by raising the mixture to a high temperature and about 800psi and then suddenly releasing the pressure. All this for a product that was only necessary because the washing powders were designed to leave the clothes feeling rough.
There was another 'I don't believe it moment' connected with this job. In order to do the pressure test I had to make a large blanking plate for one of the outlets. It was 3" thick and 24" diameter. I chopped it out of plate, marked and drilled the holes for the holding down bolts and then took it on site. When I got there it was far too big! The measurements had been sent by the 'chief engineer' who was on holiday. Instead of giving me the standard specification which was I think a 12" HH flange he had measured the actual diameter and I'd made the blank for the size of aperture he'd given me. Luckily I had room to drill a fresh set of holes at the correct pitch circle diameter inside the ones I had already done. I often wondered if anyone had taken him to task for this! I think John charged for two blanks! If he didn't he should have.

I posted on I will be mainly but this seems more apt. The Olympic coverage has no continuity your watching they then switch channels half way through, then they take you away from what you are watching at a crucial moment so some presenter or other can justify being there. Sue Barker a mediocre tennis player commenting on gymnastics and Lineker on swimming. Others are out and about sticking the mic under noses of the unsuspecting punters. From what I have seen so far we couldn't organise the preverbial in a brewery and considering what it has cost they should sack the lot at the BBC for wasting the viewers time and money. If there is an event you want to watch without chopping & changing they are all on the red button. I watched the cross country phase of the three day event competition all afternoon on Monday...very wicked of me.

Did you see the womens sprint at the Velodrome. Team GB got disqualified from the final for crossing to soon even though it was a world record speed. In the final the Chinese did the same and were only relevated to silver instead of gold, and the gold was given to Germany who were only in Bronze position in qualifying! The worlds gone mad. Eileen

Eileen, nobody ever said it would be fair. Forget the medals, they were fast!
