HELP REQUIRED

Post by Thomo »

There was an accident this morning at about 1130 outside of the Pendleside Hospice charity shop on Church St. A car reversed into a Woman who was crossing the road, and struck her on the back of her leg. The driver got out to see if she was ok, at that time she thought that she was, an elderly man who had also just crossed the road also asked if she was hurt. The woman is my Wife who is now on her way to Airedale Hospital, and unable to walk unaided. Being in some degree of shock she did not get the cars registration number, she managed to get home in her own car, and when she told me what had happened I called the Police, they are going to see if there is any CCTV and will come to see her later. The car was a red BMW Mini, the driver maybe in his late twenties, of unshaven/scruffy appearance and there was a young woman passenger who disappeared rapidly. If any of you possibly know the car or driver, or witnessed this accident, we need the registration number.

Thank You: Thomo.

Also sorry to hear that Peter, Sally was on town but not in the vicinity at that time. I have been out walking so can't help either. I do hope she is OK.

The Memsahib has just returned, Smashed big toe and on crutches. Last night she finished work at eight and looking forward to nine days holiday, now she is facing at least six weeks immobility. To the driver, come forward, we WILL find you. Many thanks to the members for your concern.

Sorry to hear about the accident Thomo, I hope she recovers quickly. It shows how even a very low speed can inflict so much damage on a pedestrian.

I Echo the feelings above ..very sorry to hear about this ...It must have all been a heck of a shock !
Presumably the Police will not be able to bring a charge of "Leaving the scene" as the driver got out to enquire , etc ....but...
"Driving without due care" ? ...."Under the Influence" ? (if they find him about now)...."Without Insurance, MOT or Tax" ? (as he left in a hurry)....etc .
I guess that they will have him on CCTV somewhere in Barlick , if they look hard enough...
Very Best Wishes for a Speedy Recovery to Mrs Thomo....

Any chance of getting the incident related in the local newspaper? The more publicity the more chance of somebody knowing who it was and letting you know, or of the driver being shamed into admission. Perhaps the charity shop would put a notice in their window asking for information, and any other shops nearby?

Thanks for that Tizer, the press may become involved. The Police have just been to go through the details again and have now got a diagram showing what took place. The wife had waited to cross the road until the Mini passed, she then crossed the road, the car stopped and then reversed quickly backwards into a parking space, the rear of the car caught her on the leg just above the ankle forcing her foot hard into the roadway, this has crushed the bone in her left big toe and it now appears that she may also have damage to her heel. She is in a great deal of pain and we did not have a good night. Again, thank you all for your comments and support.

That does not sound good at all Peter and is bound to be painful. I would think that the actions of the driver although stopping after the event would still add up to "driving without due care and attention". It is one of the basic rules of the highway code that a driver should be aware at all times about what is going on around them. I would not think that "If there is any CCTV" would come into the argument, surely if there is a camera and it is functioning "there will be" footage that could be recovered.

I have just been along Church Street and took particular note of where the CCTV camera is for that end of town. It is covered by the installation on the pole at the bottom of Jepp Hill. You can certainly see the camera from outside the Hospice shop on the pavement so one would assume that the camera can see that portion of the road. I would also assume that the camera was sited there originally to cover the comings and goings from the pubs that used to function in that area. It has a clear view of the Legion Club, Cross Keys, Seven Stars and Commercial and probably covers as far as the end of St James Road where the one down by the former Railway Pub will take over. I don't know how good the town CCTV system is but from personal experience. The system that was installed at the last school I worked in streamed to a local on-site server to hard drive and was set to over record locally after 28 days. Any of the video could be pulled off to portable storage such as CD, DVD or memory stick. All footage was streamed to the data centre though, so could be recalled for months if required.
Any more news on this avenue of approach Peter?

Thank you Ian, the Police now have the times etc and are going to pursue that possibility. We are off to Airedale again early doors tomorrow to see the fracture boffins so I have cleared the front path to the kerb and gritted it, this is one of those times when living in a bungalow is much appreciated.

The fracture specialists first comment "Oh my God" the Nurse "That looks like something from Alien" already infection has set in and the nail base is broken, it could be a long job. our WPC has discovered that all the council CCTV was focused elsewhere! at the time, so they are now going to explore private outfits.

Why am I not surprised? Perhaps the council should install some chocolate teapots instead - they’d probably be more effective...

So sorry to hear the news about the fracture. It goes without saying that if there’s anything we can do to help (shopping, taxiing perhaps?) just let me know.

Thank you for your concern Kingsley. Her left big toe is comletely shattered, infected and painful, but she is bearing up and well supported. The firm she works for are going to transport her to York for a posh dinner with overnight accomodation and thence returned home the following day. She does not like inactivity so jigsaws are in high demand. The press are coming tomorrow, we will see if that brings a result.

Good luck with the press Thomo, don't be shy about telling them how difficult it is for your wife and how much pain she is having, even worse so someone who likes to be so active and is obviously so cherished by her employer. I would expect your incident to be treated with great interest by the press.
