Drop Box--good or bad?

Post by Gloria »

I have been told it would be a good idea to have a drop box, so friends could send photos and videos straight into it for easy access. Can someone advise me on the good and bad of it? I occasionally get sent videos on disc and have been told it would be much easier to transfer them to a drop box.
Thankyou.

I use it to transfer images around to people. Very easy to use. Just create an account and away you go.

No real opinion, sorry.

I don't have one myself, Stanley didn't like what it did to his machine (can't remember the details but it may have been he found the client intrusive). Some people swear by them, I find email does for when I want to send and receive files, because everyone has an email account. Its just something else cluttering up and slowing down your computer and possible security concerns, but I have luddite tendencies. Having said that I have a Ubuntu One account which is sort of like Dropbox, but only I can put stuff in it. I use it for offsite backup and easy transfer of stuff to my other computers.

I'd read their terms and conditions and see what you think.

Thankyou both for responding, I don't think I need it but have been told I do, so the odd video can be dropped into it. I think they can carry on using a disc and the postman :laugh5:

Dropbox has a bit of a mixed following .....some people I know like it a lot and others avoid it.

Personally, I've not got an account....

....I'm told that there is a free level of "membership", but I don't know how much storage, or what facilities are included with that. My source of information uses Dropbox to share some documents and images whilst keeping others completely private - as a discrete data back-up service especially as the camera(?) sends images to the a/c automatically.

My kids persuaded me to use it but I found it was too intrusive. It was doing things I didn't like and it took some killing! Mind you, I am very sensitive about programmes that try to run your world for you. Main reason I am on Ubuntu, it's your ship and you run it how you want to!

Really??????

I swear by dropbox!!! I have 33.8GB of free storage and have it filled just over half way! I find it very useful for photographs and school work. My school doesn't allow flash drives and the only effective way of sending documents is through Dropbox, my school being hooked up to the B4RN system.... you can imagine it is very fast!

I also use it for shared folders. My mum visited India on a fund-raising trip with a few being keen photographers, they wanted to share their own pictures with everyone. Everyone signed up with dropbox and uploaded their photos, worked like a treat!! Although I must mention the majority run on Mac OS X and none running off linux.

My main use though is "Camera Upload". It has saved my ass on more than one occasion. I am often flashing roms on my Galaxy and I have lost photo's in the past because it is an afterthought! You have the choice of uploading via Mobile & WiFi or just WiFi, personally I am still clutching my Unlimited Bolt-on with O2 so this comes in handy :)

Plus what have you to lose? I hope I have made you reconsider :)

Its fairly obvious Dropbox is a 'young' thing. If you're under 30 or 40 you love it, if you're over, its something you can do without..... ( a bit like McDonalds )

"I am often flashing roms on my Galaxy"

That sounds like a lot of fun Steven, but I won't ask what on earth it means.

I had dropbox a while ago, but for some reason which I've now forgotten, unloaded it. In the light of this thread, I've given it another go. Here's a picture of a Muntjac deer, taken through my front window last year.

:) Don't worry it's just like replacing Ubuntu with Mint!!!

I love the events they do which give you free space. I've forgotten what they name them, but I still quite like it!
