We listen to the same programmes Tiz, I heard that and thought how good it was. Quite possibly true as well! I think I saw a figure of 10% increase in material costs for non-flammable cladding and of course that is a minor part of the contract cost.
Did you hear the woman refusing to move who said "We stayed in our homes when they did all the refurbishment work, why not now? What's different?" Well done that lady!

Here's one I quoted in another place this morning.
Applicants for a place at Oxford were asked to define the difference between transparent, translucent and opaque. The best answer was "The windows of this examination room were once transparent, they are now translucent and if not cleaned will soon be opaque".

Fenestration - since when has it been "posh" to speak French? Though in the context of dirt French is appropriate. ( - A Francophobe.)

Defenestration...as usual the Germans are more straightforward about their words. They just combine fenster (window) with sturz (fall).

OOPS! It's actually from Latin! I took it to be French "la fenetre" but they also stole it from Latin.

According to Collins E.D. fenestration is the arrangement of windows in a building and not the windows themselves.

I liked the phrase used on the Costing the Earth programme when they were talking about the problems of consumerism. One of them said we have too much and we now suffer from `stuffocation'. Also, `we have reached peak stuff' and are turning looking for experiences instead of buying more stuff.

If that's true the whole model of Western consumerist capitalism will crumble..... Come to think, it is! Perhaps that's what is happening.....

Lord Owen this morning on the Today programme referring to comments that Jeremy Corbyn is a Trotskyite: `The thirteenth law of politics say that you can't be both a Trot and an allotment holder at the same time'.
