The Ig Nobel Prize for Medical Education has been awarded to:
Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil, Boris Johnson of the United Kingdom, Narendra Modi of India, Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico, Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus, Donald Trump of the USA, Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, Vladimir Putin of Russia, and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow of Turkmenistan, for using the Covid-19 viral pandemic to teach the world that politicians can have a more immediate effect on life and death than scientists and doctors can. She's a McKinsey alumnus which explains a lot I think. I see they've given the job to KPMG for six months now. We're saved. . .

From the Obituary notice for Harold Evans on the BBC website.

He was passionate about newspaper journalism to the end, saying in his 2009 memoirs My Paper Chase: "It's endlessly fascinating to me how the tumult of the world can be made comprehensible by the orderly calibration of values within the discipline of the printed page."

I'm very fond of the Prince of Wales later Edward VII 's quote 'All men are equal on and below the turf', and have inflicted it upon you in the past. I always thought there was a lot of truth in it.

Rather spookily - and very pleasingly - next week it will be conclusively proved beyond all doubt. I'll tell you about it one day. . . .

" Ian Trenholm (Chair of the Care Quality Commission) said Covid risked turning inequalities in England’s health services from “faultlines into chasms” as the CQC published its annual State of Care report on hospitals, GPs and care services. The report reveals serious problems with mental health, maternity services and emergency care before the pandemic, and says these areas must not be allowed to fall further behind.

From a BBC report today on Trump and climate change. Trump is taking the US back to the 1900s and earlier. The orange knob on the universe is also the reverse button...
Over the past three years, researchers at Columbia University in New York have tracked more than 160 significant roll-backs of environmental regulations. These cover everything from car fuel standards, to methane emissions, to light bulbs.

Uncle Bob helped me to track down a quotation that was bothering me. I thought I'd share it.
"They Need Shooters More Than Tooters" (attributed to Daniel Harvey Hill who was an acerbic, cantankerous general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.)
See THIS for the source that Bob gave me which has a full explanation.

A clip heard on yesterday's Americast was a past exchange between Trump and a US newspaper journalist against the noisy background of an airliner's engines. The journalist had asked him something about Joe Biden. Trump's response: `Biden's a criminal. And you're a criminal.' End of exchange.

Keep going Donald, the more acerbic you get the less chance of four more years. (I hope!)
I spent half an our on the History of the Standard Oil Company last night looking for the quote about refining the NJ State Legislature but couldn't find it.
[The quote refers to the Standard Oil moving HQ to New Jersey because their regulations were non existent. It was said that "The only thing standard Oil didn't refine in NJ was the state legislature".]

I love Clément Beaune's response to Boris, quoted here from The Times....
`A French minister has dismissed Boris Johnson’s claim that Britain can “more than live with” a no-deal Brexit if trade, security and fishing talks with the European Union fail. Clément Beaune, the French Europe minister who is a close associate of President Macron, poured scorn on the prime minister’s upbeat assessment that Britain could prosper without an EU deal. “If the British thought they could live with ‘the freedom’ of no deal outside of the EU — if it was so easy and so comfortable — they would have already left without a deal,” he told French BFM television on Thursday.'

A good point Monsieur Beaune!

I heard a Tory MP saying that this government had been 'incredibly generous'. Either his memory is deficient and doesn't cover the last ten years or he imagines we have very short memories. I wouldn't describe austerity as 'incredibly generous'. (Heard it again. He is Ben Wallace, Secretary of State for defence.)

I came across this elsewhere today - worth a think I'd say.

"He who would do good to another must do it in minute particulars. The general good is the plea of the scoundrel, hypocrite and flatterer".

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer on LBC Radio: "This is pathetic. I think millions of people will be waking up this morning, scratching their heads, saying what on earth is going on? "We're in the middle of a pandemic, we're all worried about our health and our families, we're all worried about our jobs, and this lot are squabbling behind the door of No 10. Pull yourselves together, focus on the job in hand."
