David, my problem is that the same applies to just about everything I used to think I understood. It's my personal Uncertainty Principle.

Can't help remembering the old trade union official when asked about his feelings on switching from Communist Party to Labour. He said "Beware of certitude!"

Trevelyan would be shocked to see how many Britons are still fully or partially illiterate and innumerate almost a century later.

Brad, some studies have been done and they suggest that whilst rates of pay are an important factor they are nowhere near as damaging as the bankers suggest. This also applies to banks moving cities after changes in regulations.

Would he though?

Do you think he thought that the world would be a 'better place' by now? He did die in the 60's

I was only amused by the fact that anyone should consider a distinction in reading material, when the basic joy is reading per se rather than the content being digested. Or would he point at my shelves and say well done for the weight of history books, but really bad for all that graphic novel stuff?

'Wherever she went, including here, it was against her better judgement' - Dorothy Parker, on what she would have on her headstone.

'I like to have a Martini, two at the very most. Three I'm under the table, four I'm under the host' - Dorothy Parker

'I require only three things of a man. He must be handsome, ruthless, and stupid' - Dorothy Parker

Dorothy Parker is endlessly quotable as she combines wit with the insight that comes with a troubled relationship with the human condition. She called her pet parrot Onan, as he was always spilling his seed........

Richard, now I know where the lady I knew got the Onan connection from when she named her parrot. Dorothy had a rival, forget her name, They met in a doorway one day and the other lady said "Age before Beauty" and stood aside. Dorothy sailed through saying "Pearls before swine!"

See Charles Wirz of the Voltaire Institute. Voltaire never said it, it gained credence due to misplaced quotation marks in a publication called 'They Never said it'.
