All I can think of is that it might be for a Sheppard to gather in one of his flock, around the neck. Or it's to suspend a bag of grain, or it's a butchers hook.

Concentrate on hook Cathy, you are on the right track. By the way, a clue, this corroded example is incomplete. Originally the top pointed bar was twice as long.....

Was it originally on the end of a long handle and used as a boat hook?

I'm with Bodge on this one, used for securing ladders to chimneys.

Bodge got it first. It had been left in the top of the chimney at Newtown Mill Burnley and was so corroded it broke off just as I touched it. A steeplejack's laddering dog.

I have a recollection it was the remains of a distillery or brewery. Did your Dad make moonshine?

Your close enough, good memories. It's the remains of the winery at Eumalga where father was reared at Dubbo in NSW. It was the first winery in the state and was started by a man called Serisier. Never used in father's time but he could remember it being there, there was a large cellar. The vineyard was still there as well.

You can see the remains of the cellar, hoop iron from the casks and there were lots of these broken wine bottles.

That's because the manufacture of wine bottles in Australia was in its infancy in those days. I gave one to my mate John Martinez who was a wine merchant and he used it in the lectures he did.

Good Lass, well remembered! Not tachograph actually but the original Servis Recorder which was the forerunner of the modern spy in the cab. The discs had a light coloured wax coating over a dark base colour and a sharp point actuated by movement scratched the readings on the disc.
