I know they stored the signalling detonators in there. Plenty found when it was abandoned, we used to shoot at them with a .22 air rifle, good target fun.

The permanent way men would also use dets, also for fog signals at junctions.

I remember being on the last train out of one place - the staff put about what felt like 50 dets down in front of the departing special ( service train with extra carriage / dmu , I think )
It was a) very loud
and b) the smell and smoke took a long time to dissipate.
Although my mother complained when we got home that our clothes smelt ...

You are all right, it was a playelayer's hut. In the old days they needed somewhere to store tackle and take shelter, they were a common sight at the trackside and essential before they had transport to hold tools and crew cabs to shelter in.

Celebration of the end of WW1 in France. They had to wave US and GB flags because they'd bleached all theirs.

About 1910 I'd say. The car looks continental to me and I'd guess in France but the ball??
Only thing that comes to my mind is the legal requirement for a man with a red flag having to precede cars in the early days.......

Nothing to do with red flags having to precede cars, women's suffrage or world wars and the date is a little bit earlier. It's in Britain and the lady became famous at the time.
