Wendy has got it. Night soil collection from a block of apartments in the Netherlands in the 19th century. And yes, it does look tidy!
Bodge was on the right track and indeed stale urine, called 'lant', was collected for the textile industry, particularly for fulling heavy woollens. It reacted with the natural grease in the wool, converted it into a soapy lubricant and this helped the scales on the wool to slide when beaten and make the cloth contract converting loosely woven cloth into a much thicker and weatherproof material. Exactly what happens if you wash your favourite jumper in hot water. Contrary to popular belief this is not the same as felting even though the effect looks like felt.

Judging from their posts, StoneRoad and Stanley both now know what and where the tower is. (Have they been using that infernal google image search function, I wonder? ). Anyone else want to guess or should we give away the answer?

Excuse my ignorance but how do I use the google image search function. In simple, easy steps please.

Open a Google search window in it's own tab. Click the image search tab, this will give you a box that you can drag a copy of your image into. Simply drag and drop the JPG or whatever into the box. Google will then search for similar (or same images) and return results.

On my PC , right clicking on the image to get the drop down menu does not give a Google search option despite Google being set as my default search engine.

I would try the other option Gloria, drag the image into the Google Image Search box, works for me every time.

I didn't use Google Image Search, I did it the old fashioned way, brought up clock tower images on google and searched manually....
P's image intrigues me because he mentioned a clock. Those bells are rigged for bell-ringing, not a clock chime. If they were the latter they would be fixed and have mechanically actuated hammers. I'll have a guess, Gill Church?

A bit misleading wasn't I? Stanley's correct in saying they are church bells and still active. The mechanical clock in this church was removed and an electric one installed but with no 'ding dong' mechanism. Local but not Gill.
