I would have agreed with Chinatyke - there's a dispute between Ethiopia and Egypt over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Nile.

Close but no cigar Tiz.
Word has come back from Steve, the old bloke is, as we thought, almost certainly Jeremiah Coleman.

So the USA have made it small, is not the problem the Japanese can make it smaller, the Chinese can make it cheaper?

If so, is it the Kariba Dam? This was in danger some years ago caused by erosion in the outfall pools. I've no idea of its current status. It was built by the Italians.

That's it, the Kariba Dam. In the pic it shows the water level at only 10% of capacity.

Today I give an image of Colonial transport. Steve showed it to me years ago and told me it had been edited and altered. My question is, what was changed? Not easy and I won't let it run too long...

Were the two trucks added to the original painting for advertising reasons?

I told you it was hard and I don't think anyone will get what the alteration was. I shan't prolong the agony, I'll see if there are any more posts. As for the trucks, they were the point of the poster which was to contrast crossing the river in a canoe with the improvement of the bridge and trucks in the background.

This was another from the series. Clue, think racism and bad behaviour towards the natives.

You've all got the idea and are hovering around it. Here's what Steve said when I reminded him of what he had told me.
"Ah, yes! That Empire Marketing Board poster, in my Buy and Build book. It was part of the usual five-poster set to go up on public hoardings, as it eventually did for two months Dec 1930-Jan 1931. The two large images represented 'East African Transport Old Style' and a supposedly contrasting 'East African Transport New Style'. The former shows 'natives' trekking through grasslands, carrying stuff. The latter image is of a bridge over a river with a truck approaching, and Africans unloading a canoe on the river bank - but they are presided over by the dominating figure of a white guy in solar topee, with pipe in hand. At the request of the East Africa Trade Commissioner, the pipe was a late replacement for the whip which had been in Adrian Allinson's initial design."
So there you are. A little known fact for you. Did you like that?
