MYSTERY OBJECTS
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I had no idea what the last object was but I do know what this one is. I'll keep quiet!

the socket set version of adjustable spanner - very useful with partially nadgered nuts or hand-made stuff, especially the latter.

I've used ours a few times ... sometimes the nuts and bolts have needed serious persuading ! usually because they are rusted into the timber.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Some form of metal ingot making. Molten metal poured from the furnace at the back, cools as the ring is rotated to the man at the front who removes the ingot. Third man barrows them away.

China knows what it is, he got the right answer last time but was magnanimous to hand it to Panbiker. Then Tizer gave a explanation and Stanley turned purple. I like this game.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Yes Wendy..... In some parts of the country they are favoured building material especially in walls. They are very closely related to glass and are almost indestructible.

Stanley's reply to the original Mystery object. " I missed the response. Yes, they are making large blocks of solidified slag for use in buildings. I have only ever seen them in external structures and they were virtually indestructible, just like dirty glass. The ones I have seen are purple."

Colours tend to range from red to black depending on iron content and processing conditions. Here's my post from the last time this mystery object was aired: LINK

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
What a repository of obscure knowledge the site is! Good link Tiz.
I remember reading once that the way 'slag wool' was discovered was that molten slag came into contact with a leaking steam pipe and someone was smart enough to realise that the filaments of solidified slag that were formed had a value as a non-flammable insulating material..... Shades of Grenfell.....

Try this one. Can anyone tell me what the significance of this picture is? A clue, the location is the Isle of Eigg.
