Pewter? Tankards come to mind. Is it a trade stamp to certify the capacity of a tankard? A weights and measures stamp?

Is that what Stoneroad has already suggested with proof mark?

Liz has got it, it's a pewter tankard by Warric and what I was after was the technical term for what on other things would be a hallmark. On Pewter they are usually described as touch marks.

I was thinking more on the lines of a sheet metal former to fit into a swage block rather than an anvil.

Gloria got it first and it could be used in a swage block I suppose. Now a supplementary question. If used in the anvil, what's the name of the hole it sits in?

Just for interest, the anvil is 28lbs and ex-WD Useful thing to have about!
