You were getting close Gloria! That China has it though, Used for flaring the female end of a wiped joint between two pieces of lead pipe. Can anyone tell me what the pad was made of that was used to wipe the molten solder smooth?

Is it a disc of red wax used to seal documents by impressing an official stamp on it? Like on the bottom of legal documents.
