You were close David but Wendy has it. Burnside Mill was a bobbin mill in the 19th century.
Now then. We've sorted that, so what was the building for?

After you gave us the clue about it being Cropper's Burneside Mill I googled it and could only find that it was, and still is, a paper mill

Exactly right Wendy. Burnside was one of the watermills I researched for the DOE and at one point it was marked on the First edition OS as a bobbin mill.

There was also a Bancroft family in Blackburn who were shuttlemakers but I don't know if they were related. My grandfather was a master shuttlemaker for a different company but he knew the Blackburn Bancroft family. My dad used to tell how, as a young lad, Mr Bancroft sometimes let him join his own children for a motor car trip to Blackpool.

That's possible Wendy but I have never heard it used. There is another name for the actual surface the shuttle runs on.

I'd have thought Wendy was correct. The race is on the beater, so is beater what you're looking for?

It's where the shuttle runs through the shed of yarn but there is a name for it. You'll find the makers in trade directories as ?-maker, often associated with shuttle making which is what triggered me. If we don't get an answer soon I'll come clean. Big clue, you'll find it in 'A Glossary of textile terms' on the site, look under 'S'.

I've been through all the terms beginning with 'S' twice and still haven't found the answer!
