I would have agreed with PanBiker. an old spoke shave,draw knife, probably more used by wheelwrights for making spokes (fellows) etc. other than that you've got me over a barrel.

China is right and has hit on the almost extinct trade I was after, fellmongering. Fellmongers used to be common dealing with hides off fallen stock and slaughter houses. They produced wool but also filled the same niche as skinners in tanyards producing leather. It was always noted as a very dirty trade especially the effluent from their processes. This was a big factor in their almost total demise.
