I look upon it more suspiciously now and with a certain distaste.
Please tell me it wasn't used for "the unkindest cut of all" ( circumcision)

Stanley's got it! It's a scarifier, or scarificator, used for `safely' bleeding patients instead of using a scalpel in the days when bleeding was seen as a `cure all'. Apply the device to the patients skin. One lever cocks the spring ready to fire; the other releases the spring which causes the blade to flick out and pierce the skin. More information here: LINK

The shape of the blade triggered me. Very similar to the fleam used by vets.....

Try this related object......

You've all got it. It's a trocar and cannula used mainly for releasing trapped gases in the paunch or rumen of a cow. Usually caused by early growth grass and can be fatal. The vet's name for the condition is Tympanites of the Paunch or Rumen......

Next for shaving?

They are tiny cylindrical wooden containers Gloria with tight fitting lids. Question is, what's in them?

No Gloria, clue, the numbers on the lids denote size in thousandths of an inch.

Sorry Tiz, no. They could be used for that Gloria. They are watchmaker's drills. The set is ex-WD and I got them at that wonderful shop in Oldham, I always forget the name. Dirt cheap and I have never used them!

Was it Williams in Hollins Road, Oldham? I've a feeling there was another place I've also used in Oldham.

Just had another thought, was it Williamson? And yet another memory, was it Mumps Mill or Mumps Cross or something like that?

I once bought an ex-WD truss, officers for the use of there. The lads hung it on the wall in the site hut at Ellenroad and labelled it 'The Ellenroad Truss. For emergency use only!"

Try this one.....
