Is it part of a musical instrument? Like a whistle slide valve in those variable note whistles? (The Ludwig slide whistle.) But knowing you it would have to be a steam whistle from a traction engine. Just guessing!

Funny how the simplest things can look so complicated. It's a small container that screws open, is waterproof and has a hole for attaching it to a key fob or a dog collar. I assume it has a piece of paper in it when in use.

I think Gloria got nearest with "storing things like old sixpences" - Do you remember a similar item: the small plastic Watney's Red Barrels that were given away and I think were intended to be used on dog collars for the owners information?

Sorry, nobody is close. It's a difficult one I think. It's antique and totally obsolete today. 100 years ago there would be millions of them in use.

That's amazing Wendy, yes you're right, it's an old fashioned glass inkwell with a brass mouth but of course this one is upside down.

Yes but do they look different in summer? I don't actually know, the leaves just look like mistletoe to me.
