Finally notice the BBC trailer for "World on Fire" a dramatisation of the early days of WW2. Interesting for covering the Poland / UK connection via personal story of a translator in Poland, then looks like it goes up to about the Battle of Britain via Dunkirk, told in the main from 'personal', small scale events rather than a big political story, links into the Manchester area too, so some might like to compare with their own recollections of 1939 into 1940.

I watched the Mark Wright one. Never heard of him before, and having got his name wrong, I guess you haven't either. Very interesting. Traced his family back to Sephardi Jews in Spain - not far from Marbella to where some of his family have now moved. How ironic.

Did you see the cathedral in that small town? Name escapes me. Amazing architecture.

Here's how the Jewish Chronicle saw it - worth reading. Mark Wright

I've got a CD of Sephardi Jewish music music somewhere - I'll dig it out.

R4 actually. Melvyn Bragg is back with a new season of 'In out time', one of my favourite programmes. They did Napoleon's retreat from Moscow yesterday, fascinating and informative. Worth seeking out on BBC Sounds.

Far too late for me David, I am always in bed at 22:00. Perhaps I should look at it on iPlayer.
Incidentally, accessing iPlayer via the TV always works better than via the Humax Freesat box even though that is connected by the power cable to the router.

Today was the 70th anniversary of the founding of The People's Republic of China. I've been glued to the TV for 3 hours this morning and 3 hours tonight watching the celebrations in Beijing. This morning there was the usual October First military parade followed by a carnival procession and tonight we were treated to a Chinese mega-production in Tiananmen Square. Absolutely fantastic with a cast of tens of thousands. I hope it is shown on TV where you are, it's well worth watching.

Yes - I've watched what we are shown of the celebrations. Very impressive in a scary sort of way. I doubt I'll see the final outcome of it all - at least I hope I won't - thank goodness.

We have this channel on Freesat China Global Television Network . The cultural part of the parade was very impressive.

I can't understand why the people of Hong Kong don't seem to want to give this paradise their total support.

Thanks for that link, I didn't know it but I should have known, I watch CGTN often enough and they are forever giving out details of their website!

Hong Kong did raise the Chinese national flag in Wan Chai, I guess that is something.

Depending on how you look at history depends at which starting point you choose. Generally speaking there is always some event or condition prior to the time point under discussion that puts a different complexion on why people /governments did what they did. History is far too complex for simple answers.

Not to mention England's lack of help in the Irish famine or penal transportation of Irish people. The Irish slave trade began when 30,000 Irish prisoners were sold as slaves to the New World. The King James I Proclamation of 1625 required Irish political prisoners be sent overseas and sold to English settlers in the West Indies. By the mid 1600s, the Irish were the main slaves sold to Antigua and Montserrat.
Some things in history are best left undisturbed.

I've just watched a film about the Channel Tunnel. Real people doing real work enormously skillful and hard working. Dismantling a giant fan and refurbishing and re assembling it. very impressive. Not a politician, or think tank person, or recruitment consultant or 'celebrity' to be seen.
