FORGOTTEN CORNERS

Post by Stanley »

Every town and village has forgotten nooks and corners that slowly fade into obscurity and eventually get destroyed or altered fundamentally by the march of progress. When this happens there is a frantic search for images and information but it is usually too late. It might be a good idea to post images and descriptions of any examples we know so that there is some evidence for researchers. Don't limit it to Barlick, any examples gratefully received and archived.

Image

Here's an example in Barlick. Ripe for development, it can't survive much longer. This is just below Commercial Street in Barlick, on the bank of Butts Beck. These units are the old Shambles for Barlick, used by many of the local butchers for slaughtering and butchering meat. The beck was a handy waste disposal unit. The gap nearest the camera is where Briggs and Duxbury had their original workshop until the 1930s but it burned down later. At one time they extended into the building on the other side of the ginnel and constructed an over-bridge to join the premises together.

Here's an example of how valuable these images can be. The Nook at the end of King Street in 1979 just before it was demolished.

This part of Butts has always struck me as being ripe for change. There has been some eart-moving on the terrace just beyond the steps on the left....

Image

Change in Valley Gardens, the hedge that used to be on the left of the path has been grubbed out.

Image

Not yer average picturesque view but this could easily change shortly.

Thomo, I see you have put some pics of the interiors at the Syke up. How about posting them in this topic, they will very soon become research shots.

Here's a pic that Gus posted of Barnsey and Long Ing in the mid 1950s I think. Lots of information in here with the old canal bridge and even the milk stand on the corner of the lane.

The Valley Gardens pic of the hedge removal has changed already. Evidently a boundary has been agreed and a fence is being put in. I'll post a pic....

The original durex pattern setts laid in Newtown in about 1900. Revealed during re-surfacing a few years ago. I have been told that the men who laid them were French.

Another wonderful coincidence...
The final stage of the Tour de France is on TV, and they have just shown the junction of the Place de la Concord, and the Champs Elysee. It's cobbled, and they are laid out in a fan shape just like the ones above. :surprised:

I was asked a question by a gentleman yesterday and didn't know the answer. He had been told that the massive cast iron girders under the two footbridges in Valley Gardens over Butts Beck were originally part of the railway bridge over the canal at Salterforth. I told him I didn't know but would look into it. I have often wondered about these massive iron girders but never made the connection.

Image

I think he may be right, they are certainly far too big to be made specially for the bridges. Must have a word with Eric Parker!

I tripped over this image while looking for the Majestic pic. It's a door panel in the late Boris Hartley's bungalow on Greenberfield Lane. It originally came from the SS Majestic which was being scrapped by Thomas Ward in their yard at Inverkeithing. Matt Hartley who built the Majestic Cinema bought a lot of artefacts and used them in the cinema, this is of course where he got the name from. The booking office in the old cinema was the original purser's office from the ship and I know of at least one other house that had panelling from the ship used in the bathroom.

An example of how things change over the years. In 1979 Gisburn Road school used to have its original ventilator on the roof. One of the design criteria for the Board Schools was to have adequate ventilation. In those days foul air was believed to be the most important vector for disease.
PS. This ventilator was on top of the Infant's department at the top of the yard.
