Silverman Hall, Nelson

Post by pendletwitch »

In my youth I attended many events at the Silverman Hall, in Nelson.
The earliest memory I have is of the Nelson Police Children's Christmas Party in the early 1960s (my dad was a village Bobby), later there were discos, concerts, and various great (and truly dire) bands. The last event I remember was seeing the jazz violinist, Stephane Grappelli.
I have always remembered the place with great fondness.
My dear old friend J. claims she saw John Cooper Clarke there, but she's not totally sure.
Can anyone remember this event ?

Welcome to the site. Am I right in thinking the hall was demolished?

Thanks for the welcome! I've been following this site for years. I moved away from Pendle in the 1990s and love reading other folks stories and memories of the area.

I'm not sure if the Silverman Hall has been demolished all I could find was an article in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph in 2008 when it was still standing.

Welcome Pendletwitch. I found it on Google maps and you can stand in front of it on Google Street View. The letters "Weav..." and "Inst..." remain above what must once have been the entrance.

Yep its still standing. There are various stone plaques on this building. The main doorways giving "Weavers Institute" & "Assembly Hall" while the main banner reads "Nelson and District Weavers Association". But on the finial is the date 1904 under which are the letters "W A" = William Astley". Who were the brewers on Sagar St Nelson.
