Emmott family - watch and clock makers.

Post by Wendyf »

I had a phone call yesterday from a chap who had recently bought 2 clocks at an auction of items out of Dale End Mill in Lothersdale. He was hoping the Earby History Society might be able to provide him with some information on the makers.
One clock was made by William Emmott & Sons of Crosshills and the other by Nelson Emmott of Earby. I have discovered that Nelson Emmott was one of William's sons and that he had a shop at 39 Victoria Road, Earby in the 1911 census. By 1939 he is living in Leeds and is described as a "Commercial Traveller" while his younger brother John W Emmott is operating as Jeweller, Watchmaker and Optician from the same premises on Victoria Road.
A Google search brought up a snippet of conversation between Stanley & Fred Inman transcribed from the LTP in which they are talking about silver watches sold with the Emmott name on.
Does anyone know any more about the Emmotts please?

I bought a very good German alarm clock off him. Like a fire bell!
