STEAM ENGINES AND WATERWHEELS

Post by Stanley » 20 Feb 2012, 05:39

Got mail this morning from Andy Ross and it struck me that we need a topic, very popular search term.
Hi !
My father and mother come from Barnoldswick.
I and my brother were born there too.We came tp live in South Africa in 1963.
I was 3 years old then.
My dad served his time at RollsRoyce.
Anyway , I was looking at pics on the net of Barnoldswick and came across your site,
I ride an Adventure Motorcycle( XT660Z) and didcovered this old beauty in the Desert.
I see you are interested in Steam Engines.

I found this derelict steam crane in an old waterworks quarry near Slaidburn in 1980. I wonder if it's still there?

I've bumped this back up because it is such a popular subject and it seems a shame we can't get it going. So many good images!

Glasshouses was a perfect mill and I remember David Sekers (Who did Quarry Bank at Styal) commenting on the fact that if it hadn't been out in the countryside it would have been a wonderful mill for preservation. As it happened, we moved the wheel to QB and it can still be seen there.

Stanley, wonderful photos! I've just seen your post about an email you received from Andy Ross and the pic of the old steam engine he found in the desert in South Africa. I wonder if he's read E.V. Thompson's novel `Brothers in Arms' about a Cornish engineer using two steam traction engines to transport a gunboat overland from Cape Town to Lake Tanganyika during the First World War? He'd probably enjoy it! The publisher's details of the book are here:
http://www.littlebrown.co.uk/Books/deta ... 0751545920
"1915: Ben Retallick is asked by a War Office friend to provide two traction engines for a secret expedition attempting to take two gunboats overland from Cape Town to Lake Tanganyika - more than 3,000 miles - to wrest control of the lake from the Germans...."

Glad you're enjoying them Tiz. That book sounds interesting.......
( You fooled me, it's Brothers in war and not arms. Found it on Bookfinder for £2.20 hardback. (Must stop buying books!)
