Site Software Upgrade to phpBB 3.2.1

Post by PanBiker »

The site software is reporting an outstanding upgrade which I intend to apply during a quiet activity period. This will probably be one evening this week after making the necessary backups. The upgrade will take the board off line for a short period, this should be for about 30 minutes.

I will post again when I have an approximate time frame to run the upgrade.

We're going to be away for a week from Friday so I look forward to seeing the upgraded site on my return.

It's a security and bug fix upgrade and should be transparent to the users.

I will be running the update later this this evening between 11pm and 12 midnight. There are currently three users on the site. When I start the upgrade any users still on the board will be automatically logged off before the board goes off line for the duration of the upgrade. This should complete within the hour.

I was a bit optimistic of my timings for the upgrade, my original intended window has come and gone. The full file site backup is now running past two hours and still has over 6GB in 20,000 files to download. Following this backup the upgrade files have to be uploaded which should take about 30 minutes.

I will be aborting the upgrade for tonight and will make an earlier start on the file backup tomorrow to allow the upgrade to start at the planned time.

So, for the moment, nothing has changed folks. I will post again tomorrow.

That's what it will need Stanley, the full file dump from the live site is nearly 14Gb, about twice the size of the dev site, which is what threw me. I let it run to completion last night and I will need the best part of 3 hours, one good thing was it did copy 100% error free and checksum perfectly. The unzipped upgrade files are on 30Mb which is nothing in comparison. The compressed daily database backup completes in less than a minute.

I will start the file backup tonight at around 8pm, that should leave me time to do the upgrade and still get some sleep. :extrawink:

Just started the full file backup, when that completes I will be running the upgrade. All users on the site will be logged of before the upgrade starts. This should be around 11pm. The board will be off line for about an hour.

The backup should complete before 11pm and the upgrade before midnight if all goes to plan.

Site Upgrade completed at 23.30 the board is now fully up to date and running on version 3.2.1

I am aware that the site header is missing and the donate button, (some modified files have been overwritten during the upgrade).

I will reinstall these in due course.

Please report in this thread if you encounter any other errors not noted above.

Well that was an interesting 14 hours. The site was unstable after the upgrade so I have rolled it back to the previous version 3.2.0

Hopefully normal service has been resumed.

You're back online here after being AWOL all morning. You are forgiven!
I shan't post a lot today, I have to be scrubbed up ready to be a guest at Bancroft at 13:30.

Not been AWOL Stanley, up all night wrestling with the site, (up before you for a change). :extrawink: I bit the bullet at 3am and opted for a reload it completed at 9.30 but it works! 14 hours to get back where I started. :surprised: I'll put the low down in the admin thread.

Just to be clear Ian, I take it we are back on the original version until you have had a rethink? Thanks for having a crack at it, well outside my pay grade!

Top and bottom of it is, we can't upgrade it until the Gallery development catches up, it's still not fully compatible with this version of the platform software but it does function so best to leave it alone.
