They were good ones as well! Nice to hear from you. The Lads are quiet these days but we keep SC on life support. Too good to let it slip away. All the best to you for Xmas and the New Year.

Thanks for that Tom. If anyone sees him let me know. I have an idea he will be doing all right somewhere. He always struck me as having his head screwed on tight!

Came across this picture the other day. Someone working on the flagpole on Colne's town hall. Brave man.

I used the same method ( but with a ladder at each side) when we put the antennas on the top extension pole of the tower that we had down on the sports field at Rolls where we had our Club House for the radio club. The lattice tower was 2 section to just over 30 ft, we then had a 20 ft extension sat on a thrust bearing and rotor, we laddered this to get to the top.

When we laddered the radio tower it was just like an extension to the lattice structure below, the ladders were tied laterally together. It needed two of us to get the antenna mounted one on each ladder at either side. We had climbing harnesses with safety carabinas so we could work hands free. We were rigging a tri-band HF beam antenna which had 3 elements each between 12-15ft long mounted on a 12ft long boom. We had to rig an extension pole above the laddering to support a pulley rig to haul the antenna up and allow us to pivot it up into its horizontal mounting position on the mast. The HF antenna was fitted about a third of the way up the extension pole and we then fitted a 16 element VHF beam which was just over 5m long just below the top. A few months later we got a 10ft long vertical collinear antenna for 144MHz. We asked the local firemen if they could pop it on the top for us, easier than laddering it all again. They rocked upon practice night and used it as a training exercise with their tender mounted auto extension ladder. We had pre fitted the feeder coax and all we had to do was tape up the cable run down the mast and tower.

Nice to hear the fire brigade still like a practical practice.... I used to give them a shout at Ellenroad if I wanted a well emptying.

When my middle daughter was about 16 we had a French exchange student visit whose ambition in life was to be a firewoman. We rang up the local firestation and they said they'd show her the kit if not disturbed by a real emergency event. They put on a real good show and then dressed her up in some of the gear. "Eeh you look just like a Frog" said a passing fireman.

Ive been up that flagpole at Colne townhall, there was a strange tube set-up for the ropes to come through the roof that always chaffed the rope.

John Burlison has been busy! Guess who he found looking suitably impressive on Spotland Stack at Rochdale....
