Re: GOOD TV
I watched the first instalment of 'MacMafia' last night but went to bed at 9PM as the day's activities caught up with me. I thing I have the hang of the plot..... We will see tonight when I look at the second episode.

Re: GOOD TV
Early reviews say it's The Night Manager with spreadsheets, but not quite...... There are lots of cans of worms to follow.

Re: GOOD TV
9pm BBC2 A House Through Time....looks very interesting. There was a bit about it on the news at lunch, it was built in early 1840s as a merchants residence. It has changed hands a lot since then, and the programme follows those people.

It reminded me a bit of the Night Manager.... I shall persevere.
Gloria and Wendy, I meant to watch it but missed it. I shall go back and have a look.

Re: GOOD TV
We enjoyed it. The lady who lives in the house now would have a pleasant surprise to know of a painting of a previous owner in the art gallery. It was the home of get ahead people, they certainly didn't let the grass grow under their feet, but it wouldn't have made good to if they had. Looking forward to the next one.

Re: GOOD TV
I enjoyed it too except for the beginning, which followed the modern style of telling you everything that was going to happen.....at high speed!
I would like to know why they assumed that the first residents owned the property when the only evidence appeared to be street directories and census returns. I suppose they could have access to the deeds but just aren't telling us!
Very interesting though, I shall book my place in front of the TV for the next few weeks.

Very dynamic people these Falkners - with all versions of the name.
It's a lot easier to see the price of houses now. Falkner Street Liverpool.
I think that for half a million, I'd live somewhere else.

Re: GOOD TV
Wasn't the house sold after the second resident complete with contents?
It did seem strange that a young couple of servants got it first, I thought perhaps their employer had bought it and moved them in to care for it, but he did seem to be a very get ahead young man.

Re: GOOD TV
I thought it was just the house contents that were sold Gloria. It's on again tonight at 7.15 and I might watch it because being a slightly nosy person I had a look on the British Newspapers website and I think I found the very same advert for the house contents but it's actually at number 28 Falkner Street not 58. Mmmm... either I have the wrong advert or someone's making up stories!
Re: GOOD TV
Interesting Wendy, it does look like the same advert. I thought it was the house as well, but could be wrong.

Re: GOOD TV
Well I was wrong, their advert was definitely for 58, but very similar!
Re: GOOD TV
Did it say if it was the house and contents? Cannot imagine how that young couple could have afforded that.

Re: GOOD TV
No Gloria it was just contents. The sale was for the first occupier Richard Glenton, who was a bachelor and just worked as a clerk at the Albert Dock. The programme reckoned he was living on the "bank of dad". He wasn't young either when he lived there, he was 45 at the time of the 1841 census. The next couple to live there did well and moved on to a bigger house, they had started out as servants.
When I looked at the Liverpool Mail of that era there were a lot of adverts for house contents, and it makes you wonder if it was actually easier to sell stuff from a house than to arrange for removal to your new house.

Re: GOOD TV
I thought the first occupants were the young couple, obviously got that wrong. The furniture in the auction was shown to be very decent stuff. Think he was banking on "bank on dad" leaving him a fortune, instead it went to his sister, and he went quickly downhill.
Looking forward to the next one.

Re: GOOD TV
That's right, although you can see the probate on Ancestry for Richard and his sister, they both died in 1863 so they are listed next to each other. He left £300 and she left just £100, so she managed to get through whatever fortune she received!
Re: GOOD TV
I'm getting something completely wrong here, I thought he died in the workhouse. Perhaps I'm going to have to concentrate more

Re: GOOD TV
I watched the House last night. Enjoyable programme. The only comment I'd make is that the researcher places a bit too much confidence in the relationships column of the census. He never mentioned the possibility that a lodger could be a mistress....
BBC1 was quite good. Still watching McMafia but a bit baffled by the way they flash from one thread to another.

I agree Stanley, I have to keep reminding myself who everyone is, and their involvement. I'll give it another go and see if it straightens itself out a bit.
