In 1982 this nook in Philip Street was a handy place for the old galvanised dustbin but can anyone tell me what its original use was?

I'ld go for coal hole - the night soil hatch (blocked up) is to the right and much lower down.

Possibly where the lamp lighter kept his stores?
Or could it have stored fire buckets?

China has it. Note that it is in Philip Street. The reason why I am certain it was an ash-pit or midden is that it is actually included in the deeds of 12 King Street which I owned at one time. I don't know how it came to be an outlier like that but that's definitely what it was. I have an idea that the space next to it is also an outlier. I wonder if the present owners of the property know about this quirk?

Sticks of rare red treacle from that mine under Philip Street. The colour and rigidity is due to a high content of haematite (red iron oxide mineral). This is what they use to put the irn in Irn-Bru.

Nice one Tiz! But unfortunately wrong. Mind you the wood is the same colour as Spanish.

I know what it is but I'm not telling. The word `wood' is a clue, together with its colour.
