I've just grilled 6 sausages for Jack. I got them at Aldi. I've never seen as much fat and water come out of sausages and they came out of the grill half the size they went in........Not as cheap as they looked!

80% pork Kev but that doesn't tell you much. Technically I'm sure they are truthful but fat counts as pork as well and that's the main feature in shrinkage.

Mmmm, I always go for a much higher meat content. I've bought 98% from Lidl before but tend to stick with the pork sausage from Hirst's on Newtown. I am a bit of a sausage snob :-)

So am I. I can cook a pan of Brown's bangers and hardly any fat or liquid in the pan and virtually no shrinkage, never asked Kath what the meat content is. These were swimming in fat, water and that white scum.
Mind you, Jack hasn't refused them!

I've not had any Aldi sausages, I'll take a look through them next time I'm in there and see what's available.

When I found Tesco didn't have any SD cards for sale last week I crossed the road, went into Aldi and asked if they sold such things. They didn't. Then I tried to leave...and couldn't find a way out. It took a few attempts until I found that you had to go right down the far end, through a gate, back up to the top end and the exit was hidden behind a screen. They must be desperate to keep people in the store!

I have found a layout disadvantage with our new Aldi, not a biggie but slightly annoying. It needs an extra isle, which of course would mean an extra line of shelves and narrower isles. If you zig zag up and down the isles from where you enter the store you end up at the opposite end to the tills. Alternatively you could take a row of shelves out but then you would have even wider lanes and not enough room to display all the goods. Nowt wrong with the exit door though, in full view after you have been through the tills, can't take a run at it or you would smash you face in due to the security delay an the auto opening, perfectly OK for most folk though who walk at a normal pace.

Not tried their sausages yet as along with Kev, I get mine from our butcher, had some of Nathan's (Hursts, Newtown) for the first time this last week and they were excellent.

My understanding is that Nathan uses Steve's recipe for the pork sausage, they're as good as they always have been :good:

One of my tests of a brand is the baked beans. I tried a can of Aldi's house brand yesterday, same bean content as the others but less tomato and a bit more watery.

I grilled four of Brown's Cumberland sausages this morning and was struck by the difference when compared to the Aldi ones. No fat or liquid came out of them, hardly any shrinkage. Totally different kettle of fish!

But it's not a 'like for like' comparison though, Stuart Brown's Cumberland sausage will have a much higher meat content than the Aldi el cheapo sausages...

I do the 'odds and sods' aisle twice (you never know what you might miss on the first run, I got a pack of 3 wood saws today for £4.99) which puts me at the right end when finished :-)

Lidl have had their 95% pork sausages on offer for the last few weeks so we have swopped from the Aldi 97%. Both very similar and very tasty!

I've not been 'out of town' food shopping since Aldi opened in Barlick so I'm not up to speed on Lidl...

This is today's purchase

On sausages - there was a TV programme recently in which Greg Wallace went to a sausage factory, in Yorkshire I think, and filmed the whole process. The firm was not mentioned by name, but I'm fairly sure it was 'Heck'. They use only pork, and only shoulder meat - with some seasoning. Nothing else. I was very impressed by it all. I bought some of course, and liked them, but found them a bit on the 'dry' side. perhaps not enough fat?

I had a full English in Sainsbury's recently, which included two sausages.
Stark contrast with the Heck's, but quite edible and enjoyable. (A lot of thought given to that apostrophe)

Let's end with a quote -

"To retain respect for sausages and laws, one must not watch them in the making."

Kev, out of curiosity what are the protein and carb contents of those chipolata sausages?

Protein is 24g per 100g and carbohydrate 1.9g per 100g.

Kev, after cooking, Brown's sausage give you more bang for your buck than the Aldi ones did.

Ah, now I see that the figures on the label in the pic were expressed not on g/100g basis but on the well-known `2 chipolata' basis. If they'd been g/100g then they would have been 60% water!

That well known 2 chipolata standard, I never read the front, I go straight for the g/100g hidden away on the back. The colour coding and % figures on the front are always manipulated to suit the manufacturer :surprised:
