My dad once told me that if there was a big pile where you could park your worries and take your pick of the others in the pile you would almost certainly take your own back and be grateful. Reading the posts this morning I think he was right! I am so lucky! (How long can it last?).
Best of luck to both of you. In my mind's eye I am reliving the moment during the flight when your step daughter realised she was bleeding..... That would definitely be an 'Oh Shit' experience! Give her my best please.

Thanks. The saying in our house was "Count your blessings - there's always somebody worse off than you" and that is true.

She is, and she never panics.
Thanks, I'm sure Xiaolei will be OK, it just takes time.

Quick update. Xiaolei was released from hospital today and she and her mum moved into an apartment they've rented for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks she'll have a check up at the University hospital and hopefully be fit enough to fly home. She came for her father's funeral and didn't manage to get within 2000 miles of his hometown.

Family day today, kids and grandchildren coming over for a walk down to Gill, all I can manage at the moment. Then back to ours for a roast dinner courtesy of the communal pig. It's six years today since our Dan died.

Ditto to that for Ian.

As for Xiaolei, she flew home on 25th September, so just about 4 weeks. She was examined by another surgeon in USA who told her the operation scar was longer than expected and an artery in her cervix must have been involved for her to lose so much blood. It wasn't something you could put pressure on to stem the bleeding. She was lucky to survive. Well done, Air China, I can't thank them enough. Anyway, all is well that ends well. She is even making plans to come to China again soon.

Sally went down to Stratford yesterday on the train and will be back today with our Ruby. She will be with us until a few days into the New Year. No doubt we will get the Silsden pair for a return visit at some point as well. :biggrin2:

I was going to get the vacuum out but looking at the stocking available for when Ruby arrives, I think I will wait a bit. :extrawink:

These are brilliant ideas for helping anyone with dementia or who is simply getting increasingly forgetful. Mrs Tiz and I can confirm that such things work from our experiences with our parents. For example, her father had to be constantly reassured that he hadn't run out of money and that the nursing home wasn't going to put him out on the street. He would often say `It's my last night here'. For my father we had to put up a special digital clock/calendar which showed the day and date and words like `Morning' or `Night' in big letters because his body clock no longer told him. He would still think it was night regardless of what he could see out of the window. The white board lists will be a great help for dementia patients.

A brilliant idea. When I was doing the LTP I realised what a difference the interviews made to my old respondents. Once I got them comfortable with the process they often used to start a weekly session with "I' been thinking about last week and I remembered.....". The process of helping them to dig into the past improved their cognition every time. I proposed at as a therapy in care homes but nothing ever came of it. I have multiple examples of stroke and dementia victims whose short term memory was non-existent but once triggered they became voluble about the past. I'm therefore convinced that my constant preoccupation with history is good dementia therapy for me!
Margaret flies back to Oz today..... Lovely of her to take the trouble to check on me and she told me yesterday that it has done the trick, she no longer worries about me!

See THIS Huff Post report which follows something reported quite a while ago. It came to my notice this morning after being reported on BBC R4. I think it's nonsense. The happiest days of my life were when we were poor, struggling and rearing three daughters. They gave us a purpose in life and the advantages far outweighed any problems. It makes you wonder who they talk to when doing this research. Of course another possibility is that this is actually how modern parents feel. If so, things have changed and I feel sorry for them.

I rarely mention my family, but I've just been told that my granddaughter has got her GCSE results

3 x Grade 8, 2 x grade 7, and 5 grade 6.

They tell me that In old money that's 3 A* 2 A an 5 B's.

I'll settle for that.

Isn't it nice to see them doing so well David. My extended family all seem to be progressing well. I see so many people having trouble with family but we seem to have managed well. OK, there are blips along the way but on the whole everything looks good!

Susan told me a nice little story yesterday about her small friend Ella, five years old. Her mother took her to her first day at 'big' school and when she picked her up later she asked how it had gone. Ella said it was nice and she'd enjoyed it. The following morning when her mother was getting her ready for the second day Ella asked where they were going. When her mother told her she said "Do you mean I have to go again?" I think she's now digesting the fact that this is the routine for the next 13 years at least.

I have a worry this morning. One grand daughter in hospital for ECT treatment, I didn't know it was still used. One Daughter going in for carpal tunnel surgery and another who has just had to put down both her well-loved dogs.
Everything seems to come at once.

We used to have a poetry corner but I fear it has been culled. So Here seems a good place for this poem which was brought to my attention this morning. I have heard it before but needed reminding.
It's called 'WARNING' and is by Jenny Joseph, a Scottish poet.

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people’s gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practise a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.
