You liked the carronade as well Kev..... I shall bear that in mind, any room next to the stove for it?

Re: Shed Matters 3
Today we need to install the trunnions and touch hole. Not a lot to tell really, I decided on 3/8" for the diameter and here I am getting centred up ready to drill the cannon.
Poke the 3/8" drill right through. Then into the brass bits and find some 3/8" brass rod, cut 3" off faced and chamfered then use that to orient the cannon in the pillar drill using the trunnions to make sure I was at right angles and pop a touch hole in. Then install the 3/8" bar with Loctite 638....
At knocking off time we have a cannon ready to be installed in its carriage, which is of course the next job. In case your wondering, yes the bore is obstructed by the 3/8" bar that forms the trunnions, I could have avoided this but remember that if I had, this cannon could easily have been fired, all you need is a bit of powder and a half inch ball bearing and you could easily say blow a hole in a door! By leaving the trunnion in the bore it means that it is effectively made safe. So the next job is woodworking......

Re: Shed Matters 3
Just a point Stanley, if the bore goes past the trunnion point as far as the touch hole the cannon can still be fired. All it would need is a well rammed ball which would rest on the trunnion pin and a slightly larger charge of powder.

Re: Shed Matters 3
The trunnion wouldn't let enough powder past Ian. I think it would qualify as decommissioned.

Not very exciting this morning lads. A lot of thinking, some plotting and getting first ideas on paper. I want to do the wood cutting outside so it can wait until fine weather.....

De-decommissioning .What is to stop someone drilling down the bore and through the trunnion to create a way for the powder?

Re: Shed Matters 3
Luckily we had a dry morning so I got the chop saw out and did some measuring and cutting.
After a bit of cutting and some readjustment I finished up with the wooden components of the carriage.
Here's the general idea. As I suspected when I was making it, the cannon is nose heavy but it needs mounting like that to give the necessary elevation and depression with a compact carriage. I can sort that out when I am making the trunnion bearings.... I had a clean up in the back yard and that brought me to knocking off time. I need to do some finishing and assembly of the carriage before I go any further.

Re: Shed Matters 3
Looks good Kev but I have come to the conclusion it is a cock-up. I got the trunnion placement completely wrong and there is no way I can alter that so I have decided to accept it is nothing but a nice ornament. I shall lock the trunnions when I assemble it and it will look OK but never be an accurate model. Have you room for it next to the stove? I shall give it away and make another one but next time with the barrel properly balanced!

Re: Shed Matters 3
No, it was simple lack of thought P. No shame in it, if I will insist on working without drawings I deserve all I get! (But it usually works out....)
First job this morning was over half an hour with the fine sandpaper.... Nice bit of oak...
Then some careful screwing together! No glue, it doesn't need any.
Here's the result from the top.
I popped the cannon on top so that you can get an idea of the proportions.... Ignore the elevating wedge at the wrong end, it's only there to stop it nodding. It will look all right Kev......

Re: Shed Matters 3
You could always say that you didn't take into account of it not being loaded with a cannon ball which would have taken the balance point behind the trunnions.
Re: Shed Matters 3
Big Kev. How about one of these on your mantle piece?

Re: Shed Matters 3
Nice one P, I would give one house room. I used one for twenty years when I was in the TV trade, ranged for valves as your example. The later models which were cheaper construction and ranged for semiconductor and IC work had a slow cut out. You saw plenty of those models with bent pointers when accidentally over ranged and the cut out didn't operate.

Re: Shed Matters 3
Guess what.... I have an Avo Heavy Duty meter, it's in as new condition because it's been looked after.
But also because I found this solid aluminium box in a dustbin in Gargrave.... With some foam block inside cut to shape it is just what the doctor ordered. (Before you ask, there is no battery in it!) Ferrograph is a good old name as well, they made top end tape recorders but I was told once that this box originally held an echo sounder for marine use. The lid has a gasket to seal it so this could be true.

Re: Shed Matters 3
I need to varnish the carriage and the wedge. The hooks are there to hang them up to dry. They can have a couple of days drying at least while I make the next bits....
Nice colour and the grain of the oak isn't at all obscured.
We need four wheels so a quick trip into the treasure chests which of course produced just what I wanted, a nice clean bar of hard brass. Just over 1" diameter.
I won't bore you with the details.... Here we are at almost closing time with 4 wheels.
The next material I will be working with is steel so I harvested the brass chips off Mrs Harrison and for good measure I vacuumed the floor as well, I do like a clean shed.
