Thanks to you all. I don't feel like 83.... But then I have never been here before! One thing is certain, I never thought I'd get this far and am very grateful!
What grabbed me yesterday was that I found that due to some obscure legal reason I am still registered as an owner of the Bancroft Mill Engine and buildings. Don't even think about why, sufficient to say that all I had to do was sign a transfer to the New Museum. That change was what triggered the legal moves. So I found myself in a position where, legally, I was giving an engine and its house away. That doesn't happen every day!

Thanks again. No repercussions from vacuuming, perhaps I am better than I feel! Got David's card and the return message is that I think your judgement is OK. I am becoming a legend in my own lifetime as they say.....
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I voted for the future by buying a cheap thick shirt on the market. All polyester so not my usual style at all but we'll see. I just fancied it!

Happy Birthday, Stanley! Keep up the good work. Sorry I'm slow off the mark with my message but I got diverted by news that one of the young members of the family is 3 months pregnant and then I managed my first proper walk since my back gave up. Enjoy being 83!

Those two items are far more important than sending an Old Fart birthday greetings! But thanks anyway. I get a birthday visit from Susan and Mick this morning.

Two items.... First a link to a PDF on Yorkshire boundaries that has been sent to me by a reader. (LINK)
Second is something that I picked up from reading Thomas Cromwell.
In 1535 Henry VIII was persecuting the Anabaptists, a sect of non-conformers he hated. They believed that infant baptism was wrong and shouldn't happen until the candidates were adult. It was probably Thomas Cromwell who realised that if all parishes kept a register of births and baptisms it would be possible to identify the hidden Anabaptists as they would not baptise the child. The practice was instituted that year but not finally ratified by Parliament until the session of 1538 and has been a requirement in law ever since.

The belt of sycamores below Bleara Side snapped on our morning field walk. My question is about the shape of the trees, is it the wind that trims them so neatly? They are very exposed and between 975 and 1000ft above sea level.

I don't know, it wouldn't surprise me. Light and lack of competition has something to do with it as well, notice how much shorter the branches are on the Leeward side where there is another tree. It's invested its growth in the side where it gets all the sun for photo-synthesis with no competition. I was once told that the overall shape is mirrored in the root system......

Yes, Wendy, the wind shapes the trees and sycamore is a favourite for wind breaks in Cornwall. In the uplands you often see rowan trees bent over. There some good photos of wind-blown trees on this web page: LINK

We stayed in a cottage down a Camelford lane in Cornwall and part of the lane was made into a tunnel by the trees - you can tell which direction the sea winds came from!

Lovely pic Tiz!
I can remember the first time we went on to the Isle of Anglesey for a holiday in the war. My dad, who hated wind, took one look at all the trees leaning over away from the prevailing wind and said "Oh Christ!".
Mail from an old friend who was chairman of Coates when I did Ellenroad, he was my main supporter. A nice man and I think he likes me....
A visit today from Mo and Jess, grandchildren are great.
The fact that my lift to Airedale on Tuesday is a young lass who I have known since she was born and was at school with my daughters. She says she is doing it because I was always nice to her..... Bread on the waters!

The Humax 1000s HDR satellite box switching itself off and then going into a 'starting loop'. It's been doing it for the last week or so and is becoming more frequent, a bit of research points at the Android Freesat App on my phone being the issue. I've unpaired the app to see if it resolves it...

Ah, the joys of modern technology, Kev! I can play music mp3 files from our tablet through the TV sound bar perfectly using Bluetooth but when we try to listen to iPlayer on the tablet through the bar the sound breaks up!

I never really used the app so I won't miss it. The Humax has been on for a couple of hours now and all seems OK, I'll give it a few days before I'm confident :-)

Bit like prescription medicines, too many and they can fight each other, sounds as though it applies to apps as well. I only have one, Whatsapp......
Nice visit from Mo and Jess. Jess criticised me not dusting....... I told her she was free to come round anytime!

`Fast fashion: 'Penny on a garment' to drive clothes recycling' LINK
Good grief! Only a penny? I saw a report that Boohoo are selling dresses for £4. Why not put £1 on each garment's price then we'll have £350 million a year to spend on recycling instead of only £35 million?

Yesterday at the hospital Vicky commented on my 'new' Crombie overcoat and I told her it was 40 years old. She was impressed and wanted to know about Crombie of Aberdeen. A lot of my clothes and boots are that age, it's always seemed to be common sense to me to buy the best and look after it. That's the age disconnect they were talking about when I heard 'fast fashion' discussed on R4. I told Vicky that I thought Crombie did a refurbishment service and I was considering it because the lining is worn out but the tweed shell is indestructible! (I looked it up once on one of these retro clothing websites and it was £600! Evidently Crombie don't use this weight of Harris tweed now. When I bought it it was £85...... I've just looked at the website and the Charcoal Grey Melton that I bought at the same time and the same price is now almost £900.....

Last time it had an outing was Billy Parson's funeral. Ian took me.....

Later.... News came in that our caring Home Secretary has decided to deprive Shamima Begum of her British Citizenship. This has put the cat amongst the pigeons because for a variety of reasons it isn't at all certain that this is legal. This will mean going to the courts and guess who will be paying the lawyers!
My personal opinion is that we ought to be giving this woman the benefit of the doubt and bringing her home if for no other reason than protecting her child who is innocent. I don't understand why we aren't taking this cheaper and more effective option but instead are going to throw money at it in the courts which could well fail.
Of course the Home Secretary may know something that we don't but to the outside observer there is a whiff of racism about this. Whatever the reasons, it disturbs me..... I get the impression that T May's 'Hostile Climate' is still alive and well......
