George Pell, the disgraced Australian cardinal has lost his appeal against his prison sentence. Good. His lawyers say there is one further challenge to come in the Supreme Court. I hope they hold their nerve.

I'm glad you enjoyed the vicars, Maz. I suspect they need to resort to their humour to cope with that aspect of their job! At the same time they sprinkled in many serious comments, for example about people who seemed to have no friends and yet their funeral was well attended. There was the hard woman from a rough estate who had been the person everyone turned to when in need.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss of buyer, Kev. I expected it would happen, it's almost a normal part of the process now but I didn't want to dampen your enthusiasm. At least there's the consolation of knowing it's happening to everyone else too, you haven't been singled out for attention!

We don't understand that here. You put in an offer, offer is accepted, papers are signed immediately (the day you make/accept offer) Two day cooling off period for both buyer and seller. After that, it is rock solid. Done Deal!
If the buyer backs out, seller keeps the deposit and moves on.

How do you decide to buy? Do you get a professional survey done before making the offer, or do you just have the two days to investigate the physical, and legal aspects (e.g. are the sellers the actual owners) of property?

Does the vendor provide you with the result of such a survey, if so how can it be unbiased, or is it just 'let the buyer beware' ?

I can see the appeal when you are the seller, but from buyer's point of view, I think I prefer the English system.

The other problem here is that most houses are bought with mortgages. The provider of the mortgage, usually a bank or building society, won't let the mortgage start until their surveyor has visited the house. You also have to get a solicitor to check that the seller is actually the true owner of the property. You can't do that, and all the other checks, before having an offer accepted on the house. You have to remember Maz that here there are a lot of people making money out of the process!

Fortunately I have only paid out for the searches, on the property I'm buying, so if it all goes 'belly up' and I don't secure another buyer I'm not too much out of pocket.

Fifteen years ago when I sold my house in the south, my buyers were arrested for money laundering on the day we exchanged contracts. That was chaotic as we'd both given notice on our jobs as we were moving to the north, fortunately I had my class 1 HGV licence so got a temporary position hauling containers around the south east. It took 3 months to complete with another buyer.

We're in a fortunate position really as it's just a downsizing exercise, if I don't sell I'll just stay put :good:

Sleeping in so long! I must have needed it.
The promise of a good day, the washing dried outside yesterday and today is obviously the day for washing bedding, the duvet covers are in the machine as I write.
Plenty to do today, with the butcher's being shut I have to cook and later I will be visiting the fresh fish van in the Square. Expensive (More so than meat) but all so fresh and good for me.
All in all it's looking like a nice busy day.

The lovely summer's day we had yesterday. Good day for old blokes who still take an academic interest in pretty ladies! Don't bother telling me that is sexist, it's perfectly normal!

Wendy, must have been a local event, no problems down here.
I saw the pics of the pumice. They said it was probably from an undersea eruption. Amazing sight, floating rock is so counter-intuitive.
See THIS research on the benefits of looking on the bright side. Monty Python might have got it right. I note that they say that 85 is exceptional longevity.....

The transformer in the field behind Bleara Side blew, putting about 30 properties out. It was after midnight before they managed to trace the problem.

I can't find anything on the web but I heard a report on Farming Today of research that is being done into safe processing of waste food so that it is safe to feed to animals, mainly pigs. Swill feeding was banned after the 2001 Foot and Mouth outbreak and I have always argued that this was premature. The solution was better supervision of processing, not banning it. This is the argument that is being made now and I support it. Waste food is a valuable resource.
See THIS BBC report of the expulsion of Bury FC from the league. I have no interest in the game but regret this piece of essential social history being trashed by what looks like bad financial management.
