Kev has got it. Seen at Blyth dockyard peeping over the wall. Looks like a mechanical preying mantis. Fibre optic is nuetrally bouyant in water which allows a lighter weight rig to be used. MacGregor crane..

On my Spring visit to the area, I drove past an impressive enormous pile of what looked like giant cotton reels. I thought at the time it would make a great photograph. I guessed it was to do with the oil industry. Didn't think of 'balls of string'.

Well that's that one blown away. PanBiker got it in one. What surprised me was the size of it. This unit is sat atop a of a tower nearly 250 ft high. There were other bits and pieces lying around but they wouldn't fit in the boot of the car.

That's the Great Plug, situated at Holme Fen near PeterBorough. Pull it out and Britain will sink into the sea. As Micheal Caine would say, not many people know that! :extrawink: Holme Fen

P has it, only thing is not broke, just rusty. It's the HP cylinder of the Jubilee engine now installed at Masson Mills.

Sorry, no Gloria. Notice the taper on the mandrel and tapered rollers and thing what would happen if you turned the mandrel.

My first thought when I saw it was that it is a tool for swaging pipes, but I don't know why I would think that. If I'm correct then perhaps you've put it on here previously and it has been absorbed by my grey matter.

China. If by swaging you mean expanding the diameter you are on the right track. Take note that there is a smaller set of rollers set at an angle under the head of the tool. Now have a crack at what it is for......
