Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Or in the Royal Navy as King Billy, and yes, Stanley has got it right, well done. The figurehead from HMS Royal William. A project has been carried out to shift the 14 old and rather poorly cared for figureheads from the RN History Museum to workshops in London and Cornwall. Here they were renovated by experts and will now go on display in Plymouth. The photo shows King Billy loaded on a special vehicle for transport. You might be able to see the top of his head is missing - that's because his crown was rotted (and anyway they couldn't get him under a lintel until it was removed and the crown had a musket ball embedded in it!). There are good photos in this BBC article from April: LINK and more details in this October article on the ITV news web site: LINK

Very good one Tize and Stanley
It would be good to see it when it is refurbished.

Here he is, restored but uncrowned in the first pic, then showing off his crown (minus musket ball) in the second (photos from Current Archaeology magazine).

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
He is ok. I would go out for dinner and conversation with him. He would have to ditch the fancy dress. No promises for after dinner!
Why was he a silly Billy?
Actually I bought a fascinating book about all the Kings of England...annoyed that Febby could rattle them off at will. I will check it tomorrow. (I have tried and tried to commit these things to memory, but it is hard when you live in another country)

Thanks Tize, it was his stockinged legs that made me ask if the object was an historical King.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Mrs Tiz is exactly right. Sagars at Gladstone pottery stacked in a bottle kiln. They protected the contents from contamination during firing .
