And don’t trust people wearing gloves in food outlets etc,, the gloves are only protecting them, and they are touching all sorts of things/surfaces etc that relate to Your food.

All true Cathy but don't get paranoid, our systems are dealing with invasive bugs 24 X 7 and we survive! You can't avoid all of them.

You can avoid 90% of them...others take a bit more effort and thought.

Good point, Cathy. The gloves are more to do with giving the impression of safety; but at least it stops them picking their noses in between customers!

I've often pondered on the fact that despite all the assorted faeces and other nasties I must have ingested, particularly when working with animals, I never had any bad effects. No such thing as washing your hands then before grabbing a buttie! I can only assume that my system knew the bugs and how to deal with them as they were a constant threat. I believe the same thing happens if you are a singleton and live in your own personal bio-environment. Your immune system is prepared for any attack, think of the bugs Jack is bringing in to the house each day! Things would be entirely different if say there was a house full of school kids bringing home whatever was going!
So, today's tip is be anti-social! Don't hug, kiss or shake hands with anyone. I am reminded of the incidence of infections in new students at the start of a university term. Haven't I read that Meningitis is spread by close contact with strangers?

We used to drink water straight from the rainwater tank. The only “filter” that had was an old pair of panty-hose wrapped back and forth around the tap. A cup of kerosine was tipped in the top of the tank. That floated on the surface and kept the mozzies/wrigglers down.

I once got a bad case of poisoning from a dead mouse in a water tank in Denmark, WA. The Kerosene wouldn't have helped Maz.

A true story told to me by a member of the "Pouges" they and the " Dubliners" were playing in Northern Ireland and one morning stopped for the "cure" at a rural bar, the drink was served via a jug from the barrel, one of the several pints served contained a drowned mouse that had climbed into the jug overnight, this pint was returned with a complaint about the mouse in the pint, the old lady removed the mouse and tendered the pint back which was refused again. the old lady passing the comment about "contrary customers who wouldn't drink a pint with or without a mouse" whilst pouring a fresh one

A young lady was complaining to myself and my friend that her water supply had shut down because a dead frog had got into the supply tank to her farmhouse. My friend who is a Frenchman said leave my countrymen out of this.

When I first started at Harrods Farm, Whatcote, after leaving school my first job in the morning after milking was to get on to the handle of the large semi rotary pump in the porch and pump up enough water into the supply tank for the day, about 300 gallons. The well was under the porch and about 25 yards away was the midden into which everything, including our faeces, flowed. We never seemed to suffer any ill effects but I've often pondered about it! So today's tip is say a prayer of thanks every time you turn the cold water tap on!

No problems so far Stanley. Col added a water softener into the treatment last year as we were getting a lot of limescale and he has started fretting about getting a replacement pump just in case.

Good. Col is right, just the sort of thing I would do. Good insurance I reckon!

Never forget how lucky we are in Barlick. Because of our situation on the watershed we don't have to deal with water coming downstream from a huge catchment area. My thoughts are with those who are struggling at the moment.....

If you are specifying ridge tiles for your roof use recycled blue terracotta or stone. If you can't get them avoid the modern black plastic replacements which are useless and go for concrete ones which you can get in various colours.

Very common in Australia Maz. I remember my dad telling me about the Lysaght Colonial Ceilings at Eumalga. (LINK) These were perforated metal sheets which allowed the hot air in kitchens and homes to circulate into the loft cooling the room down. Lysaght's made corrugated iron sheeting as well and most of their production went to tropical countries particularly Australia.
In the US it was slightly different, embossed steel ceilings were common but with no perforations. I am not sure who made them. I saw them all over America.

I say “tin”...it is actually Colorbond. ( we can certainly tell when it is raining due to the noise on the roof!)

When someone tells you that a half price waterproof coat by Schoffel at £140 is good value, listen to them! The one I got is brilliant, totally wind and waterproof and you can roll it into a ball and put in a large pocket. No internal condensation at all. Ridiculous price but truly fantastic performance, I love it.

Honey, £140 will get me an entire Winter wardrobe...and new underwear! ( and pay for parking)
