I did my fortnightly assessment of the world with Private Eye and am back into the Millennium Trilogy. It's good and getting better as I get my mind switched into it. The Scandinavian setting is an added bonus, it adds interest.

'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' is engaging me as much as any book I have ever read. Totally riveting.... Seeing the films first has not diminished the experience, in fact in many ways it has helped me really get into it.
Pity Stieg Larrson died young just after he presented the three manuscripts of the Millennium Trilogy to the publishers. He never knew how successful it was and would undoubtedly have given us more. (LINK)

Finished the first book of the trilogy yesterday. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed it. Now on to the next one. Good lockdown fodder!

'The Girl who Played with Fire' is at least as good as the first volume, loving it!

Bleak House. 200 pages and I've found out its about a will. This man can certainly pad his stories out with offshoot descriptions that have only a slight connection with the story proper. Only another 800 pages to go. Now I remember why I found it a painful study at school. :geek:

I could do with a good long book to read, not political, not adventures, not sci fi or detective or spy. I like books about people. I like novels set in real historical situations and real places. I don’t like heavy reading with endless description, but I am not a Mills and Boon reader. Any useful suggestions .

Don't know about this book, but didn't used to get paid by the episode in weekly publications.? The Emmerdale of it's day. That might explain it.

PS There's no shame in giving up. . . .

Bleak House. Its now become a challenge. T-shirt material. In its own way its very descriptive, every pimple and blemish, warts and all, are there in fine detail. Of course it was set in the days before cinema and quick fire TV. Lots of archaic words that have disappeared into the mist of time. Thirty pages to strike up a new theme to the plot and another fifteen to leave you guessing who may be the next character that comes along. I'm not a quitter if I can manage War and Peace I can manage Bleak House. Besides I've run out of my stock of books.

Mills and Boon published Jack London. (LINK)
Try Call of the Wild and White fang . You could get a surprise. Than there is my favourite, Kipling's Puck of Pook's Hill.
Second volume of the Millennium Trilogy is superb and I am totally engaged. So good I ration myself!

Mum has been liking the Catherine Cookson kind of historical set books, both fiction and non-fiction. Some are entertaining, some are harrowing.

I finished Millennium II and it was so riveting it was almost painful! On to Vol. III now. The last one and only 750 pages.

Ready for the third Millennium book but a new book arrived yesterday, 'The Economy of a Northern Monastery' (Bolton Priory) and it looks interesting so I might examine that first but not read it yet.

Kershaw on Bolton Priory is going to further my research. Bit I started on Millennium III and it is as good as the previous two. Riveting stuff.

Free at last. All the estate absorbed in costs. Bleak House is finished. Actually not a bad read once you had got past the first 500 pages. Shan't both with Dickens again I much prefer biographies rather than novels.

I've never read it Ken, could be a future possibility.
As David says, we have a spooky occurrence this morning. Olof Palme was Prime minister of Sweden at the time of his assassination on February 28 1986 and Larsson regers to him as part of the plot for Millennium III. The crime was never solved, a patty criminal and drug dealer was arrested and charged two years after the killing but later released on appeal. Here's the spooky bit; see THIS BBC report on possible developments. Two days later there is expected to be an announcement of a solution to the mystery. Interesting and topical.

At the time, although he had the profile he was discounted because he was nowhere near the same stature of the perpetrator as given by witnesses.
