My understanding is the 'wide chord fan blades' made at Rolls are hollow.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
60, a mere nothing. but it'll do for now . HAPPY BIRTHDAY
I'm going back a long time but all the fan blades including Pratt % Whitney were solid with a clapper to minimise movement. When the engines got bigger the solid blades were too heavy for the disc to hold. Then came plastic blades and that's were it all went wrong for RR. Barlick developed the first hollow fan blade a world leader. Pratt followed suit some years later. The latest engines have gone back to 'plastic' but unfortunately not made in Barlick. The blades now being moved to Singapore are hollow but now considered relatively old technology hence the problems at Barlick.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
On a completely different subject I have heard a comment on R4 that the lock down has proved to be a blessing in disguise in that it has restricted the size and expense of weddings. I can't say I am sorry! I have always thought the modern fashion for over the top weddings to be ridiculous.

Thank you for the birthday wishes, I finished the guttering on the kitchen today and even got to take the old stuff to the recycling centre. Had a celebratory curry for tea.

So far just how windy it is!
Town Square yesterday afternoon. The improvements seem to have stalled. I enquired of one of my ladies and she said the word is that the money has run out and we await a fresh cash injection.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Pendle Council are awaiting a Grant Funding Agreement from LCC for surrounding pavement works, apparently all agreed but awaiting the usual paperwork delays. The Town Square is already covered financially but the unfinished bit was deemed the best location for the contractor's compound while they do the surrounding pavements. That was the update on January 30th, no idea on timescales for LCC to do the paperwork.
09:15 update
LCC have signed the paperwork, there's a meeting at 09:30 today to discuss the programme of works. Sounds like things could be moving again soon.

Do a search on the site for Steam Joe Bodge. I found a graveyard for those old engines in Minnesota.

I don't know David. I suppose it depends on the circles you move in. I wonder whether that was an outfit the child asked for or one the parents thought would be nice.
I know what you mean and I suppose the answer is 'only in certain quarters'.

Interesting Tize. I guess some of those that basically only need a computer and the internet to do their jobs have recognised an opportunity.
I wonder how many have bought houses that the previous owners lost, due to lack of business during COVID? I don’t think people are moving to the country ‘in droves’, but a lot of people are thinking differently these days.
And who wouldn’t want to live in places like Jindabyne, if you could afford to

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
It seems to me that many things have been shocked by Covid and 'The New Normal' isn't going to be a rerun of what was there before. The only thing I can be at all certain about is that people are going to tend to want more space in all regards and the shine may have rubbed off the cities and office blocks like ant hills.
My 25 year old washing up brush has started to lose bristles so I bought a new one. I used the new one this morning and it's useless! the bristles have started to distort already with one using. I shall, persevere but have kept the old one for the time being.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
I’ve never felt the need to be around lots of people. I did miss people during lock-down but I wasn’t ‘going nuts’.
What I wanted was a bit more space and to see as much sky as I could each day.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Two lots of our extended family have already decamped from Leeds up into the wilds of Yorkshire round Whitby. Basically looking for more space and getting away from the rat run traffic. Fortunately they are lawyers and do most of their work from home. Who can blame them.
Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
The family with 4 young kids who lived opposite us have moved to live in the Quantock Hills with relatives on their farm. The kids will love it!

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Talking about moving. I found out yesterday that my brother George and his wife Christine are selling their current home in the Limousin region of France. We thought they may be coming home but apparently they are looking for something further South. If you want an idyllic rural base this is it.
St Hilaire La Treille
17C three storey former water mill, separate farmhouse and a selection of converted barns that are now Gites. Site has swimming pool a pond (formerly for the mill) with some quite large carp and a mill race.

Fancy wanting to go there when they could be living in Yorkshire!
The first photo, of the painted man, prompts me to mention something I've just read. Swallowing a silver salt such as silver nitrate will turn your skin blue - permanently! In the early 1900s a man (it was bound to be a man, not a woman!) dosed himself with silver nitrate to try and cure an illness and he turned blue. Then he made a living appearing as The Blue Man. Also, just before the millennium, an American (another man) dosed himself every day with water containing silver - and turned blue. He did it because he believed that when the Millennium Bug stopped all the computers there would be a shortage of antibiotics and the silver would protect him from infection. (No wonder we have anti-vaxers and anti-5G etc).

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Our kid left Yorkshire over 50 years ago for good. The residence featured is his previous just over 20 years project after retiring and upping sticks from Hemel Hempstead permanently to France in 1999. It was derelict when he bought it. The Gites were just lean to barns on the lane. You could stand in the basement of the mill and look four floors up and see the stars. They lived in their caravan on the lane for a couple of years until they knocked the farmhouse into shape then started working on the mill. It's proper rural where they live there is an old Châteaux at the top of the valley which used to own the whole area. Châteaux at the top, water mill in the middle and another farmhouse at the bottom of the valley. Proper dark as well at night, a bit like the best bits of Yorkshire but a tad warmer. They are looking for warmer still though.

What struck me in those pics Peter was how well and cheerful Alexei Navalny looks! Not bad considering the situation and what he still faces.....
