Anyone who is on FB will have seen the Round Robin message regarding the changes applied globally to WhatsApp users privacy settings. This was instigated back in 2019 and notified by a blog post but has only recently been flagged as a potential security issue.
Basically WhatsApp have set all the group privacy settings to "Everyone" this means that anyone who has your number can add you to a group.
If you want to limit this it can be done quite easily from the WhatsApp home page. Go to settings/account/privacy and check the group settings. You can select between Everyone / My Contacts / My Contacts Except. Select the radio button of your choice.
