We are approaching the +1.5 degree climate change limit at ever increasing speeds. It would appear the thinking is to maximise profits before the gravy train stops.

I can remember when we were told that atomic power would make electricity too cheap to meter.
I looked it up this morning and here's the origin.
"The phrase “too cheap to meter” was used in a 1954 speech by the then-Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, Lewis L. Strauss. The occasion for the speech was the 20th anniversary of the National Association of Science Writers, held in New York City on September 16, 1954."

Way too little, way too late by the consensus of climate scientists by my reading. If we took serious steps 30 years ago we might have stood some chance. Instead we used as many fossil fuels in the past 30 years as we did in the 3000 years preceding that. The human race along with most of life on earth is stuffed.

I agree with Pluggy too. I've had an eye on climate change studies since the 1970s when my work made me aware of Prof James Lovelock. He'd made it possible to measure extremely low levels of gases in the atmosphere and that triggered many more studies of climate chemistry and physics. I've had to watch all the rich people with vested interest and the naysayers drowning out the cries of the climate scientists for politicians to get on and do something about the problem. They've left it too late and now we're too busy fighting wars and pandemics. Climate change could only be halted by all large industrialised countries collectively lowering emissions but instead they're falling out with each other and even with their own populations.

If we get 'netzero'd' back to the middle ages - and that surely would happen - and the 'climate' doesn't change - can I have a refund?

If its your call you can't lose and you probably wouldn't accept anybody elses call

Net Zero is a delusional pipe dream. it could never happen for a whole variety of reasons. (you might agree with that :biggrin2: )

Agreed - but it is Government policy - to be achieved by 2050. I assume that all current policy decisions have that target in mind.

All based on "a delusional pipe dream".

I received an email from Octopus Energy today to say that they are dropping their prices by 17% from 1st July. Every little helps.

I've just been knocked back for a spin on the Octopus wheel of fortune after entering my monthly meter readings. That's the first time ever, and I suspect is deliberate. They invited me to phone one of their lovely representatives. Suspicious of their motives (no change there then) I have not done so. The chance of getting a tenner is vanishingly small, and I don't really want any conversations with them at the moment.

See THIS for what I would say is a statement of the bleeding obvious.
Energy bills are likely to stay high for the foreseeable future, according to the boss of the company that owns British Gas. Centrica chief executive Chris O'Shea said while he believes the worst of the energy crisis is over, risks remain. A new price cap comes into effect this weekend which will see households with typical energy usage pay £2,074. Mr O'Shea said prices have fallen from the rise caused by the Russian war, but are higher than the long-term average. "I think the first act of the crisis is over," he said. "I think what we've got to remember is the energy prices had more than doubled before Russia invaded Ukraine. "Now, prices are back down to pre-invasion levels but they're still two and a half times the long run average."
Did anybody doubt it?

My gas tariff has dropped from 10.5p to 7.5p kwh, still a lot more than the 3p I was paying and no £400 subsidy. Shame it's not winter so I could take advantage of it by putting the heating on :biggrin2:

Heating season will be with us soon enough Kev. It has a habit of surprising us once we get into July. I always think it's such a shame that we loose summer and the long nights so quickly......
I am waiting with bated breath for British Gas to fulfil the next part of their promises and send me an account for my June energy!

I had an email, from EON Next, this morning telling me my combined energy costs will be £275 a year less from July 1st. As the energy price cap is reviewed every 3 months I'm surprised by their confidence in predicting a year...

Eon also said they wouldn't be reducing the monthly DD as the account was in debt. I logged into the app to check and yes, it's £6 in debt, the reason for this is they haven't applied the DD to the account that they took 3 days ago. They got a 'lively' response from me as it should be over £80 in credit. Patiently awaiting their response.

I've taken a gamble and fixed my energy prices for 12 months, they are predicted to drop in October but there is speculation of increases in January.
It's currently affordable so worth a punt...

I am taking the irresponsible attitude of just soldiering on until we know for certain what the charges are. At the moment they are dear but affordable.
