Men v women. Women v men

Post by Sue »

The tone of this site is getting to be men v women agian. Please don't do that. Some topics will appeal to men, some to women and some to both. Do we have to make comments about the ladies or the men?????

Life is too short for this sort of thing.

Sue, i agree, we are all people on a site that is exeptionally varied and interesting,, i became a member because i wanted to know how to ladder a chimney, it intrigued me as an engineer, i could fathom out the first two ladders it then was unknown, i now know , so being an engineer i followed my interest,, steam engines, i followed that by reading Stanleys brilliant L.T.P., that then lead me to read about Stanley and his father, then because i'm from Yorkshire, i got into the dialect forum, then into genealogy, my paternal line is Derbyshire to Yorkshire, via railways and and woolen mills,on the way as an ex machine tool engineer i got into shed culture, and of course it included humour in the joke section along with the treacle mines.
I know what ive just said may not be everyones " cup of tea", but why whinge, there is a vast amount of knowlege here, all any one as to do his ask or state something on any subject and you will get a response.
Yes there maybe a majority of male contributors, but that is not by design, but purely for once, we have out talked the females.

I joined because I found out my ancestors had lived in Barlick ( indeed two unrelated branches) in the late 1700s. I became interested in local history and then in the people writing on the site. Most of the people I wrote to inthe early days now no longer contribute. I have made a couple of realyy good friends through my interest in art, I have had help with my research and shared much of my own. However I do feel the site has got very serious . We seem to have lost some of the light hearted forums. When they are started they soon die a death.

What will be I suppose. I do feel the old site had such a wealth of forums that were easily brought back up to the top. It is not so easy to do that now, we have to start the old forums afresh

Men V women is ridiculous and non-productive but unfortunately it exists in society as a whole. We can't change society overnight but we can change the site because the content is decided by the members. The key is to start and actively support to topics. Take the content of Woman's Hour as an example and base topics on that.....?

I don't listen to Woman's Hour, and I knowfew if anyone who does. We are busy painting, walking, socialising, learning french, doing creative writing, being active members of a U3a group, reading, gardening, helping others and loads of other things.I live my life and fill it with things. I think you miss the point Stanley.

Eeeee...I am not sure 'Woman's Hour' would get a look in here either ( is this on for an hour a day or an hour a week? ).
It may be a great programme, but I find the title slightly off putting...smacks of 'patting the little woman on the head', which has never sat well with me. And as for 'push-up bras'...deary me...I say GET A LIFE! I am way past the scaffolding stage. Comfort is the key word these days, so that (like Sue) I can get on with all the important things in my very full life.
Perhaps this is the crux of the matter. Women's lives change for the better once the child rearing days are over and our horizons expand in all directions. We have choices that were not an option in our Grandmother's day. Thank heavens!

Hi Maz, will you join in our Book Club and Art Challenge? I have always avoided "reading groups", but I think it could be quite fun on here.

Would be up for an art challenge, but not a book group if it means I have to buy a book ( have a book on the go that I only bought last week).
So what is the art challenge and where do I find info?

I came along to oneguy from sideways really, I googled for info on Alice Nutter (witch--supposedly) and up it came. I found a smattering of people discussing genealogy and I have been here on and off ever since.
As for womans hour---I agree with Marilyn completely.

Perhaps we could start a topic about TV soaps such as Corrie and Emmerdale. People could then comment on the episodes they have just seen, and maybe take a guess at what's going to happen next. And, say which soap characters you like, and those you don't like. Soaps are watched by most people.

Are (younger ? ) women more happy with web 2.0 type 'conversational' media , often only including their network of friends they already know + friends of friends, rather than this older type of discussion board ? I don't think its the scope of topics that can be covered on this site , but the accessing of them by convenient , mobile , techniques with immediate two way interaction.

We don't get Emmerdale here any more, Sunray.
And our Corrie is ten years behind UK.

I haven't missed the point Sue. Women's Hour is a very popular programme with men as well and I suppose if you don't listen to it you wouldn't know that. It is very influential and far from being patronising to women. Were you not aware of Jenni Murray continuing to host the programme while having chemotherapy for breast cancer and the discussions on the programme on that subject? I listen to it while I am in the shed working on my engines so it doesn't interfere with my other activities. The point I was making is that the programme has a formula which attracts participation by women and if it works for them an hour a day five days a week it may give some clues about viable topics. Surely that's a reasonable and helpful suggestion?

A friend, a man who was a professor and the director of a British research institute, was delighted on retiring when he `discovered' Women's Hour on the radio.

Moh , wasn't meant to be , mearly an observation on how the mid-teens and twenties of today can on their mobile devices manage to share music ( one speaker wire self + one friend , send txt to bff , email someone else and update their f/b status all in about 90 seconds. Females seem to be more agile at it than the boys whom are more engrossed in individual activities viewing and pulling information together and then spending longer on some up dates ( apart from those commenting on LT pages re latest happening at Turf Moor ).

Moh, I don't think Whippy meant his post to be condescending, it's just written in an ambiguous way and easily misinterpreted. But I don't understand his last post at all! If you have something to tell us Whippy, please put it in plain English!

Somewhere out there is probably some research into the differing ways Men and Women ( and I would expect it to differ with age ) interact with web technologies, and use the web for communication.

I suspect that there is not much difference in the way in which they interact in societies that don't have the technology. Women tending to meet at the watering point for a large mass of social interaction with multiple activities. Men gathering more in evenings or engaged in achieving a common goal , often after individual research and then a pooling of ideas leading to a sudden completion of task ( mammoth killed and home, large business deal concluded ).

Holidays and Festivities may alter such more regular behaviour.

In the days when we used Lear Jet cartridges there was a fault with well-used cartridges when the tape stretched slightly and the excess in the loop could cause a jam. I came in one evening and found Vera sat there at the table with a cartridge in pieces and she was putting and extra loop in the tape to take up the slack. It worked. Impressive and I left cartridge maintenance to her. Never make assumptions about anybody's capabilities, men or women! Funnily enough in the programme on the 747 rebuild the other night they showed the interior of the flight recorder, the 'Black Box' (Red actually) and I noted that they worked exactly like the old Lear Jet cartridge on an endless loop.

They were brilliant Comrade, very good sound quality on four track tape but knocked out of the market when Dolby noise reduction became available.
