There you are, I told you Wendy would know! Yes, it's a wick for a paraffin heater, used in brooders and and under sump heaters for cars in the old days.....

Sorry, nobody is anywhere near. You need some clues. The bit you can see is about 4" X 3" and it's part of something not a lot bigger. The wear is due to its age. What can you think of that's made of a tropical hard wood and strengthened with brass?
I've seen the last two comments and no to both.
