Re: GOOD TV
Thanks Gloria, I'm looking forwards to it. It's their top of the range model at the moment and the picture is crystal clear with wonderful colour. The kids have all piled in and told me I have done the right thing as well. Nice of them because it comes out of what will be their money!

PS, not a lot bigger than the present one which they tell me is 40". I did make sure it had a sensible base so it will fit on the present cabinet.....

Re: GOOD TV
I have good news. The set is installed and I have got it set up and logged in to my old YouTube app and the new login you need for iPlayer. I have cracked how to do these and they are quick and efficient. I shall doubtless install other apps like ITVx as time goes on. For now I am content with being able to control it and having live TV and YouTube.
The picture and sound quality is superb. The thing I have noticed particularly is that it is far less strain on my eyes than watching the old set. That was obvious immediately as I watched it. So far so good. No disappointment, I am well pleased....

Still noting the fact watching TV is easier on my eyes and one thing in particular is brilliant on YouTube, the NASA images of distant planets and satellites. I was looking at Triton last night and the images were stunning!

Re: GOOD TV
One last observation. The new set is definitely better for my eyes. They are much better all round now, I was damaging them each night by watching TV. I can't imagine why, all I can do is put it down to the old fashioned diagnosis of 'eye strain'. Whatever, it has been cured!

Re: GOOD TV
We caught up with part 4 of After the Flood last night, apart from being hard work to follow it’s also not good to listen to, a lot of fast talking mumbling, perhaps it’s my age, but I’m struggling with it in many ways.

Re: GOOD TV
We have just binged the whole of series two of Trigger Point over two nights on ITV. Every episode left on a cliffhanger, so what are you supposed to do if you can?

Re: GOOD TV
Gloria, I totally identify with what you say about mumbling and bad sound on some programmes. The usual explanation that it's down to our hearing deteriorating doesn't hold water with me. I have no problem whatsoever with the Shipping Forecast every morning. It is, as you say, down to mumbling and speaking too fast. There is also the plague of 'background music'. Why do we need it when we are trying to understand what a commentator is saying or a similar situation. It's almost as though the programme makers are afraid of 'dead air' which is how they describe silence.
I also have problems with sub-continent accents but have to be very careful about voicing this as it can easily sound racist.

Re: GOOD TV
We are watching Doc Martin and Death in Paradise on catch up right from the beginning of each series, and we have no trouble hearing or understanding what they are saying. So I am putting it down to modern tv programmes.

Re: GOOD TV
And you get examples of it in every day life. People gabbling is a common problem. When it's on the media I often wonder if it's because they know their time is limited and want to get as much in as possible.
Whatever, it means that they get nothing across to me. Look up Gillie Potter and The King's English.

Re: GOOD TV
Watched the Antiques Road Trip. They went to Goosnargh, and did a promo for Mrs Kirkham's cheese. Quite comprehensive showing the history and technique of manufacture. Seems the method was invented by a chap called Gornall. Aunty Jean once said that half the village was called Gornall, and the other half Proctor.
Reminded me that they had a little unpleasantness before Christmas, and I wondered what the outcome was. Seems all's well again. Mrs Kirkham
That's good.

Re: GOOD TV
I must have been asleep David, I watched the prog and missed that.
I've been struggling with the episodes of the latest series of Vigil but fear I may have to give up to it. The plot seems to be nothing more that placing Suzanne Jones (DCI Amy Silva) in a life threatening situation every week and at least one lesbian love scene. I need more!
(I had the same problem with the last series of Shetland and begin to wonder if it is me being too demanding. I don't think so but I haven't ruled it out.)

Re: GOOD TV
We have just watched "Bodies" on Netflix with Stephen Graham. Eight part series which starts as a detective story in Victorian London. Then jumps to the same story in 1941, then 2023, then 2053. Four different era detectives with the same scenario and the same corpse found in the same place. It's has a time travel back story, nuclear explosion, skulduggery in the 40's. Good plot but you need your wits about you to follow it.

Re: GOOD TV
I ventured into ITVx last night to watch Mr Bates v. the Post Office. It reminded me of just how egregious an affair this was. Why do we not see heads roll for crimes like this, I have commented elsewhere on the water company bonuses. Is this what is meant by being nice to business and encouraging them?

Re: GOOD TV
Well - I'm quite used to not having any BBC channels now, and I don't think I'm missing much. I have taken instead to watching Youtube quite a lot, and I came across this pair yesterday. I've watched a few of their videos, and they seem likeable and energetic, but I feel there is a back story (or two) lurking somewhere.
Here's a link Blackpool and Pendle Hill which I will mention, as the climb to the top of Pendle Hill (from about 14 minutes in) is good. It's well photographed and edited, with suitable music.
I've only ever seen pictures of Pendle Hill from a distance, and this is like being there.

Re: GOOD TV
Pendle ascent, looks like they went up Ogden Clough rather than the route off Barley Lane or following the beck from the centre of the village. That circular route is a tad longer than the other two. When I was a lad we used to walk from Barlick and go up on the night before Good Friday and watch the sunrise from the summit. Apparently that is when George Fox, he of the Society of Friends (Quakers) had his vision on the summit.
