That is very clever and totally true.I wonder which of the two does the most ecological damage?

This makes you think. Grimsby House clearance auction

After watching it I'll be going to the tip. My little treasures seem to be worth very little.

A box of records, including one signed by Val Doonican has just sold for £3. My Sony mini Hifi has made £4.

PS I've redone the link - It works OK for me. I like auctions - even ones such as this.

The video didn't play for me David..... But don't get too depressed at the low 'value' according to the auctions. Our treasured possessions depend on their value to us in other terms than money. William Morris said Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful. . and such artefacts don't always have a monetary value that matches their value to you. Books are a good example, if you sell them you almost always lose on the deal except for some very exceptional items. But you never think about that when you are buying them. You place your own value on them and that has nothing to do with money.
So cheer up! Put a record on the hi-fi and immerse yourself in the sound......

Nicely put - and a good quote. :good:

PS I've re-done the link. It works OK for me. I like auctions - even down market ones like this.

I stayed up till silly o'clock last night / this morning, watching the final round in the chess world chanpionship candidates knockout tournament. I went to bed thinking that Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi had shaken hands with American Fabio Caruana, indicating resignation. That meant a tie for first place and play offs. I was a bit puzzled as I could not see why he had resigned. There did not seem to be an imminent win visible (at least to me). I was watching a feed with no audio commentary, but the printed comments seemed to have the same idea.

I now find that the result was in fact Ian was offering a draw, which means there is a sole winner, and the winning challenger will be a seventeen year old (youngest ever challenger) Indian gentleman called Gukesh Dommaraju.

Collpase of stout party (again)

I envy you you#re knowledge of chess David. They once tried to teach me the art at grammar school but failed miserably. It had no attraction for me whatsoever. I am very happy for you!

After having a hiccup the site is now behaving again. I've admired Andrew Neil for a long time - since his late night show with Portillo on BBC 2. This clip too good to let pass. It also supports my latest hobby horse that there are too many people supervising work / activities, and too few actually doing stuff. Note the arogant sense of entitlement of the questioner, that she has the right / duty to get involved with the press.

Exactly what my old mate Newton Pickles said over 30 years ago. He was right then and you are now. Too many chiefs and not enough indians.....
