The triangular section of the ruler ensures that if it is set down on a piece of shafting it automatically adjusts itself to lying parallel with the centre of the shaft. It was used for marking key ways or similar cuts on a shaft. A very clever little tool.
Next object?

Don’t know, but I don’t think he’d normally dress like that in the area he is in.

Stanley, I know it’s the wrong Topic, but do you know anything about Jim Pollard’s Ancestry. Did he ever mention anything?
Maybe family from Cumbria?

Sorry Cathy I can't remember. But if you go to his evidence in the Lancashire Textile Project the first questions were about his ancestry so if there is anything you'll find it there....

Cathy try opening it from this link. It says locked at the top but that just means it can't be altered or commented on.

When we updated the LTP I installed it on another instance of the phpBB forum software that the live site runs on. We did that on Stephens server space, that allowed us to embed all the pictures in context in the project. In the old version of the LTP they were only available as a separate download. We then used website mirroring software to create a full navigable, read only copy of the website. This is what is linked, and is what you see as the LTP2013. it took 9 months or thereabouts to do all the work in the major update to the project 11 years ago.

Thanks Stanley and Wendy, I had good look thru all of Jim Pollock. He wasn’t who I thought he might be, but enjoyed reading it anyway.

This badly corroded object has been exposed to the weather on masonry for many years. The two left hand legs have broken off. Can you tell me what its original purpose was?

No Gloria. Big clue, it was found on a chimney head and is something a Lancashire steeplejack would use. :biggrin2:

Correct Ian. It's the mortal remains of a laddering dog.

The QI answer that would get the bells ringing is. It's a female spider!

I will add that it could probably give you a nasty bite.

Huntsman’s do bite if provoked or threatened.
Their venom isn’t dangerous for humans, but there will be pain, skin irritation and swelling.
They jump too.
