I have a cd by Cab Calloway called 'Frantic In The Atlantic' and another cd by Bix Beiderbeck '20 Great Tracks' - Riverboat Shuffle. Do they rate amongst all the greats already mentioned.

As you can see, instead of being lazy I went and looked for myself. These videos must have been filmed at the same time I knew her in the 1980s when she had been 're-discovered' after years spent nursing after she fell from popularity. She was installed in a bar on Fifth Ave in NY and that's where I first saw her thanks to my mate Ethel. Same combo, even the same ear rings. She took a shine to me and we used to have a drink after she'd finished her set and she was a wonderful earthy woman. We corresponded until she died, she never really recovered from breaking her hip. Lots of good memories of a lucky encounter.

Enjoyed that , but feel so sorry for the Guitar !...
He's playing a LOWDEN and they are very expensive . Our local branch of Hobgoblin Music took one in ( not a cut-away model) to sell on commision last week , and they want £1495 .00 for it . It's in lovely second-hand condition , and probably the best guitar I've played in years.

I don't know why , but when I hear the first passage I fill up ! (....and then it gets "Hopeful"... bloody marvellous )
I have a wonderful Deutsche Gramophon (Archiv) vinyl boxed set ..(Wensinger)... and this was always the one I would play first.

Thanks for that link, I'll try it later Brad. In 1981 the bar on 5th Avenue was very plain, it was called 'The Cookery', classed as being in Greenwich Village and I was staying on East 10th Street so only a short walk away. All it was for was allowing you to drink and listen. There was a row of long tables with benches down the right hand side, podium to your left and a couple of small tables over in the far left hand corner where Alberta used to sit between sets. Ethel didn't give me any clues the first time she took me there. We sat on a bench, ordered drinks and after an interval the old pianist (Gerald Cook) came on accompanied by the bass player and then a bloke came in supporting a very frail old lady and I began to wonder what we were in for, she could hardly walk. Funny thing was that as soon as she grabbed hold of the microphone stand she was transformed and started to belt out her songs. 'Trimming my front lawn' was my favourite line in 'My Man' and I can't begin to describe how wicked her rendition was, nobody had any doubts about the sub-agenda! I asked her later how come a woman at 80 years plus could be so sexy, she just grinned and said that you either had it or you didn't and age made no difference. She was magnetic and whatever it was she had it in spades. I still have her letters and it was such a shame that she had such a long period of obscurity. The bloke who brought her back to NY in 1977 was Barney Josephson and we owe him a vote of thanks. Been reading the letters and she wrote Downhearted Blues, Bessie Smith's first big hit. She was 87 in 1982 so 86 when I knew her. So glad I had the experience and she is very fresh in my memory.

Wonderful in their day, but very dated now. I have one or two clips of them and still chuckle (slightly).
I remember seeing them a few times live in the '40s and early 50's at The Alhambra inBradfordstani. Which Betty I know not. I believe they went through a few.

Click that to insert a video.
A new box appears , and if you right click the space where you want to "paste" your link , you will be able to do so ......
and there's no need to shorten it ,either ....you put in the whole link including Http /etc,etc...
Much easier now , even if you sweated blood trying to fathom the "old" system....eh !
