Maz and Cath. Read Little Exiles yesterday and it is a bleak, well-written but depressing read. There is a reasonably happy ending but on the whole I wouldn't recommend it unless you were prepared to be thoroughly depressed about the way these young immigrants were treated.

On a different note, couldn't help but smile when I saw the comment about the Huhne gaol sentence. The journalist said there was one bright spot, he wouldn't be sharing a cell with Vicky.....

But I had to smile when I read on the BBC news that the queen has had to cancel a few more duties and appointments ( no that wasn't the funny bit...do hope she is doing ok) after her recent bout of tummy troubles. HOWEVER she will still hold the 'Privy' Counsel on Wednesday!
Must be a pretty big privy... :laugh5:
Marilyn, they used to have multi seaters I have seen a six seater made of stone, wouldnt have fancied that in the winter.

Did you hear about the lady who went to the carpenter and asked him to make her a new two-seater?
Carpenter: "Large thighs or small thighs, madam?
Lady: "Don't be rude, young man!"
Carpenter: "Thorry madam."

I was intrigued by how they made the black and white smoke. Have a look at this LINK if you're interested.

Does this mean the Falklanders are fighting the Pope as well?

I must have missed the outbreak of a second war in the Falklands!

I am not of the faith but it seems like a good choice to me to have someone who comes from the continent with the most Catholics. I cant see why they always have to elect someone so old though. I hope he does a good job and wish him all the best though.

One step up from clocking your mate in
Police finger medic over fake silicone digits
By PRW Staff
Posted 14 March 2013

In a move reminiscent of Mission: Impossible, a Brazilian doctor used fake fingers to fool his hospital’s biometric check-in system into recording that absent staff had turned up for night shifts.

Thauane Nunes Ferreira had replica silicone fingers for 11 fellow doctors and 20 nurses, which she used to fool her employer’s automated clocking-in system. The scam earned Ferreira £1,600 a month from grateful absent colleagues.

A Brazilian television network claimed that the head of the hospital’s emergency room ran the scam and that his daughter had not worked a day in three years while getting full pay.

The local mayor, Acir Fillo, went further, claiming there may be as many as 300 hospital employees drawing a salary who only exist as fake fingers.

Ferreira, 29, had six fingers on her person when she was arrested, three have already been matched to fellow employees, police said.

I've spent the last few days with my nose in Victorian newspapers, researching Henry Pickles, theatre proprietor & son of Barlick. I found a purler of an article from the Burnley Advertiser 18/02/1865. The gist is that Richard III was being played at Henry's wooden theatre in Burnley. In the final scene Richard fights Richmond at Bosworth Field and, of course, loses. On this occasion the actor playing Richard carried on with the battle & refused to die; there was shouting from the gallery & Henry was at a loss, until he eventually sent a messenger to get a policeman. Upon the constable's arrival & on threat of a whack with his truncheon, the actor duly "died". It seems that he had "fortified himself....with an extra stock of spirits". Very funny and beautifully written.

My trip switch did it's shutting off act early this morning. It must have tripped at about the time I was getting up. I'm not doing anything about it, we'll just wait and see if it's a one off thing or something more serious. This is the first time it has happened since I did my 'work the switch routine' last time.

Awaiting confirmation of whom, but I believe a Borough Councillor has resigned from Pendle, so there may be a byelection for it within Barnoldswick. Not seen any notifications about calling for one, so that is a bit cloak and dagger at the moment.

Could be a loose wire somewhere (doesn't take much) or a bit of moisture. Very difficult to track down...

A hailstorm set off the alarm in my car outside the house! After a few minutes it stopped but the indicators continued flashing. I used the remote locking to unlock and relock the car, which stopped them flashing.

They're finishing it this morning between 05:15 and 06:00. I shall record it.
Just heard a news item on BBC World Service about India fingerprinting and retinal scanning all one and a quarter billion of the population for a national identity scheme. Some data base! They estimate it will cost about $4billion and be a good investment.
