Culvert under the canal at Salterforth near the old boatyard at SD 888458. Incidentally this was also the point where the Tramway from Park Close Quarry met the canal and I often wondered whether the culvert had been constructed large enough to carry the tramway under the canal if so required.

Some time ago, there was a query about the setts being reinstated following a trench being dug on the side street next to the old gas works yard. Myself and council staff have been going round the houses trying to pin down the utility company that carried out the work.

Last week, I discussed this with the owners of the Cornmill.

They advise that they own the whole of the side street from the front of Cornmill Cottages towards their property. The trench dug earlier in the year has been temporarily reinstated with bitmac to allow settlement prior to the setts being reinstated. They are in touch with the contractors, and will make sure the work is carried out when the trench has settled.

They also expressed the desire to reinstate setts on the whole of the roadway in their possession when funds allow.

Gritstone setts make a good road surface for slow speed traffic. When I was a lad the whole of Wellington Road through Stockport was paved with granite setts and the problem with them was that they were so hard they got polished over the years and were very treacherous when wet. In London, particularly in the city, tar-soaked hardwood blocks were popular, a very hard wearing and quiet surfece. However they burned well on the fire and were pinched by the poor for fuel!
