Its an oil tin for a loom. The oil was stored in the tin which hung on the side of the loom. The fine oil was applied with a feather to the bars where the ends of the picking sticks ran. Stanley knows what I mean eve=n if I don't know the names. Nolic

Nolic is dead right, a lovely little example of the tinsmith's art. There were hundreds and thousands of them but I wonder how many survived.

I am fast coming to the conclusion that your whole house must be inundated with mystery objects. Have just woken one of mine btw...
