David. What was it? Did we ever get the right answer? Was it the spool from the VCR tapes?

Sorry. Senior moment. Thanks Ian. I looked a few times and I couldn't understand why nobody was asking for the answer. Apologies.

I don't know about the lubricator.

However, last night's Pendle Council meeting was enlivened by a reference to the fact that the proposed Brand Pendle logo was the spitting image of one for an internet sex shop. A list of merchandise included a waterproof vibrator. Regretfully, I haven't got an image to post...

Shame on you! Now stop diverting attention, I shall have to spill the beans if nobody takes a stab at the lubricator!

Can't have beans spilt especially in Barlick. So one last guess. Cylinder lubricator. Mixes with the steam inlet to give some cylinder lubrication. I think they used to have them on the appropriately named "Stanley" steamer.

True it's a cylinder lubricator and yes it's on Bancroft engine. The difference with this one is that it was originally designed for delivering tallow in the days when that was the only effective high temperature lubricant. So, it was redundant when fitted to the Bancroft engine which started in 1920 but I think some old-fashioned engineers still thought it was a good thing because tallow is an effective anti-scuffing agent, still used when fitting cotters, keys and stakes. I never used them because modern cylinder oils are far better. Try this one.... sorry, I was desperate..

I must get one for the wife if it is a new way of burning things, she's very creative at black art in the kitchen.

Well, you could... but this isn't the intended purpose of the object.

Thinking about December's festivities may give you a clue.
