I grew up thinking "Careless Love " was an English song , but it seems not to be !

I'm going to have a real moan here....About BBC policy towards Folk and Roots Music (Jazz has been affected too , I understand )
For the last 18 months , across the country, BBC Local Radio have been cutting out "Minority Interest " Music programmes....
I became acutely aware of this in late 2010 , when FOLK W AVES was axed from Radio Derby .
It had been running for 25 years , featuring local artists as well as national and international content , and was latterly presented by two of my friends.
No sustainable reason was given , and a Facebook protest with 2500+ members eventually came to naught.
Many more programs have been closed or threatened , and it's nothing to do with money ....alternative offerings costing the same or more have been put in their place ....
....IT'S POLICY.....
The latest Casualty is likely to be MARY ANNE KELLY'S GLOBAL GATHERING on Radio Scotland..
Aside from the fact that the BBC are breaking their charter (Local content is supposed to be quaranteed)....the Policy is muddleheaded.....
There is a Big revival of interest in Folk and Roots Music going on at the moment among young people.
.....so the Beeb AXE Folk Programmes ....JOINED-UP THINKING OR WHAT !

What upsets me most about the above is that the BBC have long been the champions of education , and have done such great work in maintianing standards of broadcasting......
I wonder why they now feel the need to dumb down the output of their local stations .....but seemingly they do.
Folkwaves was replaced by wall to wall pop music and a so-called "phone in"...The presenter is spectacularly inane .
An example of the content .....
....The late Princess Diana's clairvoyant ( not a title I would wish to perpetuate !) was invited to come on the show with a pair of PSYCHIC DOGS,to give "readings" or somesuch.....(you just couldn't make it up , could you ?)
If it wasn't so insulting , it would be funny....(ish)
On peut crache....( "you may spit !")


PS The woman with the Mystic Hounds may have been Linda Lancashire , and therefore not connected with Diana....but nevertheless I'm sure the point is made . (Diana's ex-Medium does live in the vicinity , ......and on planet Zog !)

The link for Fred MacD would not play and had to be listened to on YouTube ......When it came on I thought "funny , that doesn't sound like Fred singing " and sure enough it turns out to be Eli Green with F.M. playing his distinctive stye slide guitar as accompanyment ...Loved it !
I'm not sure if Eli was playing another guitar , as suggested in the exchanges below the video ..I though he might have been playing "the brush"......
Take a look at this guy...great percussion idea , and not too easy to get right, either .......

I was talking to a chap from our local Freecycle group the other day who has an injury to his left hand , and wants to play guitar.
He had bought a device on the internet which would allow him to play chords when he pressed it onto the strings .
The trouble is that it plays a C major , and if you move it up two frets , it forms D major and so on (Not very satisfactory).
I looked at his hand , and the only real defect is that his ring finger crosses behind his pinkie....When I pointed out that Dgango was similarily limited ,he said "Ah , yes but Django could already play when he was injured " (that's a bit defeatist )
I'm going to give him a short free lesson to point out what he WILL be able to play with three fingures , and maybe a slide.
I'm sure he will do well IF HE REALLY WANTS TO , and that is the key !

Mr B ...I think I mentioned on the old site , what a lovely bloke Dave Sudbury is ......I played a gig with him once , it was magic !
The accent you hear on this recording of his own song , is just how he speaks ....(West end of Derby ) ....brings more than a lump to my throat every time I hear him ...

I've only been to the Hollywood Bowl once and Dave Brubeck was on the bill as the second act, they played Take Five, one of the few jazz pieces I am really familiar with. Wonderful! But he wasn't top of the bill, the next act was a blind man and a bassist and he knocked the rest into a cocked hat. That's right, it was George Shearing. And you're right, my minder was looking after me well that night! Thanks Susi!
